What is the 6% interest subsidy on vehicle loans in Gujarat?

The 6% Interest Subsidy on Loans taken for Vehicle Purchase through Banks is a scheme of the Gujarat Tribal Development Corporation, the corporation set up under the Tribal Development Department, Government of Gujarat. Locally the Corporation is known as the Adijati Vikas Nigam, and its scheme pages are published on adijatinigam.gujarat.gov.in.

The scheme's design is simple and worth understanding before applying, because applicants routinely misunderstand it. The Corporation does not lend the money. A Scheduled Tribe applicant goes to a bank, takes a normal commercial vehicle loan on the bank's own terms, and buys the vehicle. The Corporation then pays 6% of the interest on that loan, so the borrower's effective interest burden falls by six percentage points. According to the Corporation's scheme page, support runs up to Rs 1.20 lakh per beneficiary per year, and the vehicle covered should cost between Rs 5.00 lakh and Rs 20.00 lakh.

The Rs 1.20 lakh ceiling is arithmetically consistent with the rest of the design: 6% of a Rs 20 lakh loan is exactly Rs 1.20 lakh. In other words, a beneficiary financing a Rs 20 lakh vehicle draws the full ceiling, while somebody financing a Rs 8 lakh vehicle draws roughly Rs 48,000 a year.

Why the scheme exists. Commercial transport is one of the few self-employment routes in Gujarat's tribal districts that produces a steady monthly cash flow. A goods carrier moving farm produce to an APMC yard, a passenger vehicle on a rural route, a pickup on contract to a nearby industrial estate. The barrier is never the demand; it is the interest cost on a Rs 10 to Rs 20 lakh loan in the first years, before the route is established. A 6% reduction in interest is the difference between a viable EMI and a defaulted one.

Key features

  • Interest subsidy only. The principal is borrowed from and repaid to a bank.
  • 6% per annum subsidy rate.
  • Support up to Rs 1.20 lakh per beneficiary per year.
  • Vehicle cost band of Rs 5.00 lakh to Rs 20.00 lakh.
  • Roughly 100 beneficiaries targeted per year, so the annual quota is limited.
  • No application fee at any stage.

Who is eligible for the 6% vehicle interest subsidy?

You can apply if:

  • You belong to a Scheduled Tribe notified in Gujarat and hold a valid caste certificate from the competent authority.
  • You are a resident of Gujarat.
  • You are buying a vehicle for business or self-employment, not for private family use.
  • The vehicle's cost falls within Rs 5.00 lakh to Rs 20.00 lakh.
  • You have obtained, or can obtain, a loan sanction from a bank for the purchase. Without a bank loan there is nothing for the Corporation to subsidise.
  • You are an adult able to enter into a loan contract, and the bank is satisfied with your repayment capacity.

You cannot apply if:

  • You do not belong to a Scheduled Tribe, or your caste certificate is from outside Gujarat.
  • You are buying the vehicle purely for personal or family transport.
  • You are paying for the vehicle in cash or from your own funds, with no bank loan. The scheme is an interest subsidy and has no cash grant component.
  • The vehicle cost is below Rs 5 lakh or above Rs 20 lakh, which falls outside the published band.
  • You are an existing defaulter with the Corporation or with the bank.
  • You have already drawn the benefit of this component for another vehicle in the same period. The scheme is not a repeat annual entitlement for the same applicant.

What documents are required?

Aadhaar card Yes Identity and bank account linkage
Bank loan sanction letter Yes The core document; the subsidy attaches to this loan
Vehicle quotation or invoice Yes Shows the cost falls in the Rs 5–20 lakh band

Driving licence No Where the applicant will drive the vehicle personally
Income certificate No Some district offices ask for it

How to apply for the 6% vehicle loan interest subsidy

  1. Open adijatinigam.gujarat.gov.in and go to the Apply for Loan section of the Gujarat Tribal Development Corporation site.
  2. Register on the loan portal with your mobile number and Aadhaar details, and select the vehicle purchase interest subsidy component.
  3. Fill in the application with your personal details, Scheduled Tribe certificate number, the vehicle you intend to buy, its cost, and the bank you are approaching for the loan.
  4. Upload scanned copies of the caste certificate, residence proof, Aadhaar, vehicle quotation and bank passbook, then submit and save the acknowledgement number.
  5. Approach the bank with the acknowledgement and obtain a loan sanction letter for the vehicle.
  6. Submit the sanction letter and the original documents at the Corporation's district office in your district for verification.
  7. After sanction, buy and register the vehicle, and give the Corporation the invoice and registration certificate so that the interest subsidy can start being credited to your bank account.

There is no fee for the application at any of these steps.

How to apply offline

  1. Visit the Gujarat Tribal Development Corporation district office in your district, or the Tribal Development Department office at the district headquarters.
  2. Collect the application form for the vehicle purchase interest subsidy and fill it in, attaching self-attested copies of every document listed above.
  3. Submit the completed form and obtain a dated receipt or inward number, this number is what you quote in every later follow-up.
  4. Complete the bank loan formalities separately and return the sanction letter to the same office.

Applicants in remote talukas often find the offline route faster in practice, because the district office can check the caste certificate and the bank sanction in one sitting.

How do you check your application status?

  1. Log in to the Corporation's loan portal at adijatinigam.gujarat.gov.in with the credentials you created.
  2. Open the application list and check the stage — submitted, under district verification, sanctioned, or subsidy released.
  3. If the portal shows no movement for several weeks, visit the district office with your acknowledgement or inward number and ask for the file position.
  4. Once the subsidy starts, verify credits in the bank passbook or statement of the account you gave in the application.

Why do applications get rejected?

  • No bank loan sanction. The most frequent reason. The Corporation cannot subsidise interest on a loan that does not exist.
  • Vehicle cost outside the Rs 5–20 lakh band.
  • Vehicle registered for private use rather than for commercial or business use.
  • Caste certificate issue, expired, from another state, or from an authority not recognised as competent.
  • Mismatch between the invoice name and the applicant's name, which happens when the vehicle is booked in a relative's name.
  • Annual quota exhausted. With roughly 100 beneficiaries targeted a year, late applications may be carried to the next year rather than rejected on merit.
  • Existing default with the Corporation or the financing bank.

Most of these are avoidable. Book the vehicle in your own name, confirm the commercial registration category with the RTO before purchase, and get the caste certificate renewed before applying rather than after a rejection.

What are the money terms in one place?

  • Subsidy rate: 6% per annum on the bank loan.
  • Maximum subsidy: Rs 1.20 lakh per beneficiary per year.
  • Eligible vehicle cost: Rs 5.00 lakh to Rs 20.00 lakh.
  • Annual coverage: approximately 100 beneficiaries.
  • Principal: borrowed from and repaid to the bank on the bank's terms.
  • Application fee: nil.

Where do you go with a grievance?

Complaints and follow-ups go first to the Gujarat Tribal Development Corporation district office that handled your file, quoting the acknowledgement or inward number. If the district office does not resolve the matter, escalate to the Corporation's head office through the contact details published on adijatinigam.gujarat.gov.in, and thereafter to the Tribal Development Department, Government of Gujarat.

Two warnings are worth repeating. First, no agent can get this subsidy sanctioned for you, and the Corporation charges nothing for the application. Second, the subsidy follows a live loan: if the bank loan is closed early, transferred or falls into default, the interest subsidy stops with it.

Frequently asked questions

How much subsidy does this Gujarat scheme give on a vehicle loan?

The scheme gives a 6% interest subsidy on the bank loan, with support of up to Rs 1.20 lakh per beneficiary per year. The vehicle must cost between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, and the Rs 1.20 lakh ceiling is what 6% works out to on a Rs 20 lakh loan.

Who can get the 6% vehicle loan interest subsidy in Gujarat?

Scheduled Tribe individuals resident in Gujarat who take a bank loan to buy a vehicle for business or self-employment are eligible. The Gujarat Tribal Development Corporation, under the Tribal Development Department, runs the scheme.

Is the loan given by the Corporation or by a bank?

The loan is given by a bank, not by the Corporation. The Gujarat Tribal Development Corporation only pays the 6% interest subsidy on that bank loan, which is why a bank sanction letter is the central document in the application.

Can I buy a private car for family use under this scheme?

No. The scheme supports vehicles bought for business and employment purposes, such as goods carriers, passenger vehicles and commercial transport used to earn a livelihood. A purely private family car is not eligible.

How many people get this subsidy every year?

The Corporation's published target is about 100 beneficiaries a year under this component. Because the annual quota is small, applying early in the financial year improves the chance of being covered.

How do I apply for the 6% vehicle interest subsidy?

Apply through the "Apply for Loan" section of adijatinigam.gujarat.gov.in, then submit originals to the Corporation's district office. There is no application fee.

What happens if I stop repaying the bank loan?

The interest subsidy stops. The subsidy is paid on a live, regularly serviced loan; default is a matter between the borrower and the bank, and the Corporation can withdraw support and seek recovery of subsidy already released.
