What is Art Exhibition Assistance in the State?

Art Exhibition Assistance in the State is a Gujarat scheme administered by the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi, the state fine arts academy that works under the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat. The Akademi is housed at Ravishankar Raval Kala Bhavan at Law Garden, Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad, and the scheme is listed on its website as rajyaman pradarshan sahay; exhibition assistance within the state.

According to the Akademi's scheme page, the scheme supports native Gujarati artists who organise an individual or collective exhibition of visual art inside Gujarat. The art forms named are painting, sculpture, graphic art and photography. The assistance is up to Rs 25,000 per approved exhibition, or the actual expense, whichever is less.

The problem the scheme addresses

Mounting a show is expensive before a single work sells. Gallery hire, framing, transport of sculptures, printing of invitation cards and catalogues, and publicity all have to be paid for in advance by the artist. For a young painter or a sculptor working outside the big-city gallery circuit, that upfront cost is often the reason a body of work never gets shown publicly at all.

• A defined cash reimbursement of up to Rs 25,000 against real bills.
• A minimum standard; 30 artworks, so the support goes to a substantial show rather than a token display.
• A selection committee that reviews applications, so the benefit is competitive rather than automatic.

Who is eligible for art exhibition assistance in Gujarat?

You can receive the assistance if:

• You are a native of Gujarat and an adult.
• You work in visual art, painting, sculpture, graphic art or photography.
• You either completed formal art education, such as a diploma or degree in fine arts, or have already held at least one personal or group art exhibition.
• Your exhibition will be held inside Gujarat.
• You will display at least 30 artworks.
• You have not already been supported three times under this scheme.

You are not eligible if:

• You are not a native of Gujarat.
• You have neither formal art education nor an earlier exhibition to show. The Akademi uses these two routes as alternative qualifications; failing both means the application cannot be considered.
• Your exhibition is outside Gujarat or abroad. That is covered by a separate Akademi scheme, videshman tatha rajya baher pradarshan sahay, and you must apply under that one instead.
• Your show has fewer than 30 works.
• You have already drawn this assistance three times.

Practising in a non-visual discipline, music, dance, theatre or literature, also puts you outside this scheme. Gujarat runs separate academies for those: the Gujarat Sangeet Natak Academy and the Gujarat Sahitya Academy.

How much money does the scheme pay?

The Akademi pays the lower of the actual exhibition expense and Rs 25,000. An artist who spends Rs 18,000 on gallery hire, framing and printing receives Rs 18,000; one who spends Rs 60,000 receives the ceiling of Rs 25,000.

The scale of the scheme is modest and public figures make that clear. The Akademi's own reporting for 2021-22 records Rs 8,23,227 distributed to 22 artists for exhibitions held within Gujarat, and Rs 5,88,205 to 6 artists for exhibitions outside the state under the companion scheme. That works out to an average of roughly Rs 37,000 per artist across both schemes, and confirms that the number of supported shows each year is in the low tens, not hundreds. Applying in the very first days of the window matters more than it would under a large entitlement scheme.

How to apply for art exhibition assistance in the state

1. Watch for the annual advertisement the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi places in Gujarati daily newspapers, and check the Akademi website at lalitkalaacademy.gujarat.gov.in around the end of March.
2. Download the prescribed application form from the Akademi website, or collect it in person from Ravishankar Raval Kala Bhavan, Law Garden, Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad 380006.
3. Fill the form and attach self-attested copies of your Gujarat native proof, age proof, art education certificate or evidence of an earlier exhibition, along with photographs of the works you intend to display.
4. State the venue, dates and the number of artworks — the count must be 30 or more, and the estimated expense.
5. Submit the completed form to the Akademi office in Ahmedabad between 1 April and 15 May, by hand or by post, and keep the acknowledgement.
6. Wait for the selection committee to review the applications and issue approval letters.
7. Hold the exhibition, then submit original bills and receipts to the Akademi to claim the reimbursement, which is credited to your bank account.

How do I check the status of my application?

The Akademi does not run an online application tracker for this scheme. Status is checked by contacting the Akademi office directly on 079-26425562 or 079-26562558, or by email at igslka@gmail.com, quoting the date of submission and your name as it appears on the form. Keep the acknowledgement you received when the form was handed in, it is the only proof of timely submission.

Why applications are rejected

• Filed outside the 1 April to 15 May window. Late forms are not taken up at all, whatever their merit.
• Fewer than 30 artworks listed for display.
• The exhibition is outside Gujarat, which belongs under the companion scheme rather than this one.
• Neither art education nor a prior exhibition can be evidenced.
• Three earlier grants already drawn by the same artist.
• No original bills submitted after the show, which stops the reimbursement even where approval was granted. Photocopies are not accepted.
• Committee did not select the work, given that applications exceed the budget in most years.

There is no fee to apply for this scheme, and no agent can secure a sanction. The only money involved flows from the Akademi to the artist, after the exhibition and against original receipts.
