What is Assistance for Area Expansion in Fruit Crops?

Assistance for Area Expansion in Fruit Crops is a horticulture scheme of the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat, implemented by the Directorate of Horticulture. The scheme pays a per-hectare planting subsidy so that farmers can bring new land under fruit crops and adopt modern planting systems instead of traditional wide-spaced orchards.

According to the Directorate of Horticulture, the scheme is designed to raise both production and productivity of fruit crops in Gujarat by supporting high-density and ultra high-density plantation of mango, guava, lemon and pomegranate, along with tissue-culture banana and papaya. High-density planting puts far more trees on the same hectare and, with drip irrigation and pruning, brings the orchard into bearing earlier than a conventional layout.

What the scheme does

  • Shares the cost of planting material and establishment for the first year of a new fruit orchard.
  • Pushes farmers towards accredited nursery material, so that the state's orchards start from disease-free, true-to-type saplings.
  • Encourages diversification out of low-value field crops into horticulture, which is a stated priority of Gujarat's horticulture policy.
  • Pays through Direct Benefit Transfer into the farmer's own account, with no cash handling.

How much money does the scheme give?

Crop / component Assistance
Mango, guava, lemon, pomegranate; high-density / ultra high-density plantation Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 per hectare, maximum 4 hectares
Tissue-culture banana 40 per cent of expenditure or Rs 50,000 per beneficiary, whichever is less, maximum 4 hectares
Papaya 50 per cent of cost, maximum Rs 30,000 per hectare

Three points matter more than the headline number. First, the 4-hectare ceiling applies per beneficiary, not per plot. Second, the rate is a share of cost, so the subsidy released can be lower than the ceiling if your actual bills are lower. Third, rates are re-notified with the annual component list on iKhedut, so the figure that governs your claim is the one shown in the component you actually applied under, not last year's number.

Assistance for perennial fruit crops is normally released in instalments spread over the establishment years, subject to survival of the plants at verification. Farmers should plan on the first instalment being the largest and later instalments depending on how much of the orchard is still standing when the horticulture staff inspect it.

Who is eligible for Assistance for Area Expansion in Fruit Crops?

You can apply if:

  • You are a resident of Gujarat and an active farmer.
  • You hold cultivable land in your own name, evidenced by 7/12 and 8-A records for the plot to be planted.
  • You are planting one of the notified fruit crops in the current year's component list.
  • You have a bank account in your own name for the DBT credit.
  • You apply within the notified window on iKhedut and before raising the plantation.

You cannot apply if:

  • You do not own or lawfully hold the land, pure labourers and unrecorded tenants are not eligible to claim in their own name.
  • The 7/12 and 8-A records do not match the applicant's name, and no consent letter from the recorded holders is filed.
  • You have already drawn assistance for 4 hectares under this component.
  • You planted the orchard before applying and cannot show a sanction. Post-facto claims are ordinarily rejected.
  • You buy saplings from an unrecognised nursery or cannot produce an original bill in your own name.

What documents are required?

Document Mandatory Notes
Aadhaar card Yes Identity and DBT seeding
7/12 and 8-A land records Yes For the exact survey number being planted
Bank passbook or cancelled cheque Yes Account must be in the applicant's name
Nursery bill for planting material Yes From an accredited or approved nursery
Mobile number Yes For iKhedut acknowledgement and SMS
Caste certificate No Only for SC or ST category allocations
Joint holder consent (sammati patrak) No Where land is jointly held

How to apply on iKhedut

  1. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and go to the Schemes section, then choose Horticulture schemes (bagayati yojanao).
  2. Find the component for area expansion in fruit crops and click Apply. Select whether you are already a registered farmer on iKhedut; if not, register with your details and set a password through OTP verification.
  3. Fill the application: survey number, area to be planted in hectares, crop, spacing, bank account details and Aadhaar number, and submit it.
  4. Confirm the application. An unconfirmed application is not treated as filed, and this is where most farmers lose their claim.
  5. Print the confirmed application, sign it, attach self-attested copies of the 7/12, 8-A, Aadhaar, bank passbook and caste certificate where relevant.
  6. Submit the signed printout with documents to your taluka or district horticulture office within the days allowed on the acknowledgement.
  7. Wait for the pre-sanction (purva manjuri). Buy the planting material and plant only after the sanction, then file the claim with the original nursery bill.

How to apply offline

  1. Visit the taluka agriculture or horticulture office, or a Village Computer Entrepreneur / Gram Panchayat e-Gram centre, and ask them to file the iKhedut application on your behalf.
  2. Carry Aadhaar, 7/12 and 8-A, bank passbook and mobile phone.
  3. Collect the printed application, sign it, and submit it with the documents at the horticulture office counter, keeping the receipt.

Even the offline route ends in an iKhedut record — Gujarat does not run a parallel paper-only sanction for this scheme.

How to check your application status

  1. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and select the Application status (arji ni sthiti) option.
  2. Enter your application number and the registered mobile number or Aadhaar number, then submit.
  3. The screen shows whether the application is confirmed, whether the physical copy has been received at the office, and whether pre-sanction has been issued.
  4. For payment status after sanction, check the bank account statement and, if nothing is credited weeks after verification, ask the district horticulture office for the DBT release date.

Why claims get rejected

  • Application not confirmed on iKhedut, so it never reached the office.
  • Physical copy not submitted in time with the required documents.
  • Name mismatch between Aadhaar, bank account and the 7/12 record.
  • Plantation raised before sanction, making the claim post-facto.
  • Nursery not accredited, or the bill is in someone else's name.
  • Target exhausted for the district, applications are sanctioned against a fixed annual physical target, and a valid application can still be kept pending or carried forward when the target is full.
  • Poor survival at verification, which reduces or stops later instalments.

Where to get help

  • iKhedut portal: ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in: scheme list, application status.
  • Directorate of Horticulture: doh.gujarat.gov.in, approved nursery lists and district horticulture office contacts.
  • Taluka or district horticulture officer, the first stop for a stuck application or a pending verification.
  • Kisan Call Centre: 1800-180-1551, toll free, for general agricultural advice.

Applying on iKhedut is free. No official can charge a fee for sanctioning this subsidy, and the money is only ever paid into a bank account, never in cash.

Frequently asked questions

How much assistance does the fruit crop area expansion scheme give?

Assistance is Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 per hectare for high-density and ultra high-density plantations of mango, guava, lemon and pomegranate, subject to a maximum of 4 hectares per beneficiary. Tissue-culture banana carries 40 per cent of the expenditure or Rs 50,000 per beneficiary, whichever is less, and papaya carries 50 per cent of cost or a maximum of Rs 30,000 per hectare.

Which fruit crops are covered?

Mango, guava, lemon, pomegranate, tissue-culture banana and papaya are the crops named in the published component list. The exact crop list and rates are re-notified on iKhedut each year, so confirm the crop is open in the current window before you buy planting material.

How many hectares can one farmer claim?

A maximum of 4 hectares per beneficiary. A farmer with a larger holding can plant more, but the subsidy stops at the 4-hectare ceiling.

Where do I apply for this scheme?

Apply online on the iKhedut portal at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in under horticulture schemes. After submitting, print the application, sign it and deliver it with the documents to your taluka or district horticulture office within the time allowed.

Who cannot apply for this scheme?

Farmers who do not hold cultivable land in Gujarat in their own name are not eligible, and neither are applicants who cannot produce 7/12 and 8-A records for the plot being planted. Plantations raised before the application is sanctioned are generally not eligible for reimbursement.

Do I have to buy saplings from a particular nursery?

Yes, planting material must come from an accredited or departmentally approved nursery, and the bill must be in the applicant's name. The Directorate of Horticulture publishes the list of recognised nurseries on doh.gujarat.gov.in.

When is the money paid?

The subsidy is paid after the plantation is physically verified by the horticulture staff and the claim with bills is approved, and it is credited to the farmer's own bank account by direct transfer. There is no cash payment at any stage.

Is there any fee for applying?

No. Registration and application on iKhedut are free. A village computer entrepreneur or cyber cafe may charge a small typing fee for assisted filing, but no official or agent may charge for sanctioning a subsidy.
