What is Kunwar Bai Nu Mameru Yojana?

Kunwar Bai Nu Mameru Yojana is a one-time marriage assistance scheme of the Tribal Development Department, Government of Gujarat, delivered through the Directorate of Tribal Development and its eVanbandhu portal. The scheme pays Rs 12,000 per couple to the family of a Scheduled Tribe girl at the time of her marriage.

The name comes from the Gujarati custom of mameru, the gifts a bride's maternal uncle brings at her wedding, and the scheme is often written locally as Kunwarbai Nu Mameru Yojana or Kuvarbai Nu Mameru. The state has placed itself in the maternal uncle's role for families that cannot meet wedding costs without borrowing.

Who is eligible for Kunwar Bai Nu Mameru Yojana?

A family qualifies if all of these hold:

• The applicant is a native of Gujarat.
• The applicant belongs to a Scheduled Tribe, evidenced by a caste certificate from the competent authority.
• The annual family income does not exceed Rs 6,00,000.
• The marriage is of an adult daughter, and it is the first or second such daughter in the family.
• The bride is at least 18 on the date of marriage.
• The groom is at least 21 on the date of marriage.

Who cannot apply

• A family that is not Scheduled Tribe is not eligible under this scheme. Scheduled Caste and socially and educationally backward class families should apply to the parallel scheme run by the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, which has its own criteria.
• A family with annual income above Rs 6,00,000 cannot apply.
• A third daughter's marriage in the same family is not covered — the cap of two adult daughters is absolute.
• A remarriage is expressly excluded by the scheme conditions, whether of the bride or the groom.
• A marriage where the bride is under 18 or the groom under 21 is not eligible, and is in any case an offence under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

What documents are required?

Register the marriage. A ceremony alone, however large, does not create the document the file needs. The marriage certificate issued under the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act is what the district office verifies.

How to apply for Kunwar Bai Nu Mameru Yojana

1. Open the eVanbandhu portal of the Directorate of Tribal Development at evanbandhu.gujarat.gov.in and click "Please Register Here".
2. Fill the registration form with full name exactly as it appears on the Aadhaar card, gender, date of birth, Aadhaar number, email ID, caste and mobile number, then set and confirm a password and click "Confirm". The user ID and password are sent to the registered mobile by SMS.
3. Log in with the user ID, password and captcha code. The portal displays the schemes applicable to the caste entered at registration.
4. Select Kunwar Bai Nu Mameru Yojana from the list of schemes shown.
5. Fill the application form with the bride's and groom's details, the marriage date, the family income and the bank account into which the Rs 12,000 is to be paid, and upload the required documents.
6. Click "Save Application". The system generates an application number. Then click "Print Application" and keep the printout.
7. Track the case using "View Application Status" on the same portal by entering the application number and date of birth.

Applications must be made within two years of the engagement, and where the wedding took place at a mass marriage the claim lies with the district in which the Saat Phera mass marriage was held, not necessarily the district of residence.

Can this be claimed along with the mass marriage scheme?
