What is Poshan Sudha Yojana?
Poshan Sudha Yojana is a maternal nutrition scheme of the Women and Child Development Department, Government of Gujarat. Poshan Sudha gives pregnant women and lactating mothers registered at an Anganwadi centre one full hot cooked meal a day, eaten at the centre itself, together with supervised iron-folic-acid and calcium supplementation and nutrition and health counselling.
According to the Women and Child Development Department, the scheme began as a pilot in 2017-18 across 10 ICDS blocks in five tribal-dominant districts — Dahod, Valsad, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur and Narmada. Approval was later granted to extend it to all 14 tribal districts of Gujarat from 2022-23, taking coverage to 106 ICDS blocks and about 13,894 Anganwadi centres. The department's own note records an allocation of Rs 118 crore for 2022-23 and roughly 1.36 lakh beneficiaries a month.
The scheme is often written as "Poshan Sudha Yojana" or simply PSY in state documents, and is described in nutrition literature as Gujarat's "One Full Meal" scheme.
Why the meal is eaten at the centre
Poshan Sudha deliberately uses spot feeding rather than a take-home ration. The reasoning stated in the programme design is that food carried home is often divided among the whole family, so the pregnant woman herself may end up eating only a fraction of it. Serving the meal at the Anganwadi centre also gives the Anganwadi worker a daily contact point for weighing, counselling and watching that the iron and calcium tablets are actually swallowed — which is what "supervised supplementation" means in practice.
Who is eligible for Poshan Sudha Yojana?
You can get Poshan Sudha if:
- You are a pregnant woman or a lactating mother.
- You are registered at an Anganwadi centre run under the Integrated Child Development Services in Gujarat.
- Your Anganwadi centre falls inside one of the 106 ICDS blocks in the 14 tribal districts covered by the scheme.
You are not eligible if:
- You live in a block or district outside the notified tribal blocks. Poshan Sudha is a geographically targeted scheme, not a statewide entitlement. Women in non-covered areas continue to receive the regular ICDS supplementary nutrition and, where eligible, Mukhyamantri Matrushakti Yojana benefits.
- You are not registered at an Anganwadi centre. Registration is the single gateway; there is no separate application route that bypasses it.
- You are neither pregnant nor lactating. Poshan Sudha does not cover adolescent girls, elderly women or the general household.
Poshan Sudha does not publish an income ceiling, a caste restriction or a parity limit — the Women and Child Development Department's description of the scheme is based on pregnancy and lactation status plus Anganwadi registration. If any local officer asks for a BPL card or an income certificate as a condition, ask them to show the written instruction, because no such condition appears in the department's published description.
What documents are required for Poshan Sudha?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Anganwadi registration / mother and child protection card | Yes | Opened by the Anganwadi worker when the pregnancy is registered |
| Aadhaar card | No | Used for identification and entry into the Poshan Sudha mobile app |
| Proof of residence in the block | No | Ration card, voter ID or utility bill showing a covered address |
Poshan Sudha is not a cash-transfer scheme, so no bank passbook, no DBT seeding and no e-KYC step is involved. That also means there is no "payment status" to track — the benefit is the meal itself.
How to apply for Poshan Sudha Yojana
Poshan Sudha has no online application form. Enrolment is done entirely at the Anganwadi centre.
- Locate your Anganwadi centre. Every village and urban ward inside a covered block has one. The ASHA worker or the local sub-centre can tell you which centre serves your address.
- Register the pregnancy as early as possible. Tell the Anganwadi worker you are pregnant and ask to be registered. Early registration matters, because the nutritional benefit of the scheme is greatest across the full pregnancy rather than the last few weeks.
- Get the mother and child protection card opened. The Anganwadi worker records your name, expected date of delivery and contact details, and enters you in the centre register and in the Poshan Sudha mobile application used for monitoring.
- Ask the worker for the meal timings and days at your centre and start attending. The meal is served at the centre and eaten there.
- Collect the iron-folic-acid and calcium tablets on the schedule the worker gives you, and take them in front of her where the centre follows supervised supplementation.
- Continue after delivery. Confirm with the worker that your record has been moved from the pregnant-woman list to the lactating-mother list so the meal does not stop.
How to check whether you are enrolled
- Ask the Anganwadi worker to show your entry in the centre's beneficiary register — you are entitled to see your own record.
- Check that your name, expected delivery date and mobile number are correct; a wrong delivery date is the most common cause of a beneficiary being dropped from the list too early.
- If your entry is missing, raise it with the ICDS supervisor for the centre, who covers a cluster of Anganwadis.
Gujarat runs a dedicated Poshan Sudha mobile application for monitoring the scheme, used by field staff to record attendance and meal distribution. It is a supervision tool for officials rather than a beneficiary self-service portal, so a mother does not need to install anything.
Why beneficiaries get left out of Poshan Sudha
- The pregnancy was never registered at the Anganwadi centre. This is the single largest cause. A woman who delivers at a private hospital and never visits the centre may not appear on any list.
- Migration between blocks. Seasonal migration is common in Gujarat's tribal belt. If you move, register afresh at the Anganwadi centre at your new location instead of assuming your old record travels with you.
- The centre is outside a covered block, even though the district name sounds tribal. Coverage is decided block by block.
- Records not updated after delivery, so the entitlement stops instead of continuing into the lactation period.
- Irregular attendance. Because the meal is served on scheduled days at the centre, a beneficiary who cannot travel to the centre effectively loses the benefit for those days; there is no arrears payment or compensation.
How to raise a grievance about Poshan Sudha
Poshan Sudha grievances follow the standard ICDS escalation ladder of the Women and Child Development Department:
- Anganwadi worker — for missing registration, meal timings or tablets.
- ICDS supervisor — for repeated non-service at a particular centre.
- Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of the block — the officer responsible for all Anganwadi centres in the block.
- District Programme Officer, Women and Child Development Department, for the district.
- Beyond the district, the state Women and Child Development Department at wcd.gujarat.gov.in and the Gujarat state public grievance system.
No fee is payable at any stage, and no agent or middleman has any role in Poshan Sudha. If anyone asks for money to add a name to the beneficiary list, that is not part of the scheme.
How Poshan Sudha differs from Gujarat's other nutrition schemes
Poshan Sudha is one of several maternal and child nutrition programmes running in Gujarat, and beneficiaries often confuse them:
- Poshan Sudha Yojana — a hot cooked meal eaten at the Anganwadi centre, plus supervised iron and calcium, in tribal blocks.
- Mukhyamantri Matrushakti Yojana — a separate Gujarat scheme providing a monthly take-home ration package of food commodities to pregnant and lactating mothers.
- Routine ICDS supplementary nutrition — the standard take-home ration available to registered beneficiaries statewide.
These are not alternatives you choose between at an application counter. Which of them reaches you depends on where your Anganwadi centre is and what the state has notified for that area, and the Anganwadi worker is the correct person to tell you which apply to you.

Frequently asked questions
What does a beneficiary actually get under Poshan Sudha Yojana?
Poshan Sudha Yojana gives one full hot cooked meal a day, eaten at the Anganwadi centre, plus supervised iron-folic-acid and calcium supplementation and nutrition counselling. Nothing is paid in cash and nothing is taken home — the model is deliberately spot feeding, so that the meal is eaten by the mother herself rather than shared with the household.
Which districts does Poshan Sudha Yojana cover?
Poshan Sudha Yojana covers all 14 tribal districts of Gujarat, spanning 106 ICDS blocks and roughly 13,894 Anganwadi centres, after the 2022-23 expansion. The pilot started in 2017-18 in 10 blocks of five tribal-dominant districts — Dahod, Valsad, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur and Narmada.
Is there any fee or income limit for Poshan Sudha?
No. Poshan Sudha Yojana is completely free and the Women and Child Development Department has not published any income ceiling. Eligibility is based on being a pregnant or lactating woman registered at an Anganwadi centre inside a covered block.
How does a pregnant woman join Poshan Sudha Yojana?
Register the pregnancy with the Anganwadi worker in your area — there is no online form and no application fee. The Anganwadi worker enters the beneficiary in the centre register and in the Poshan Sudha mobile application, after which the mother can start coming for the daily meal.
Can the meal be taken home instead of eaten at the centre?
No. Poshan Sudha is designed as a spot-feeding or "one full meal" programme, which means the meal is served and eaten at the Anganwadi centre on the scheduled days. Take-home rations for pregnant and lactating women in Gujarat are delivered through separate ICDS supplementary nutrition arrangements, not through Poshan Sudha.
Does Poshan Sudha continue after delivery?
Yes. Poshan Sudha covers lactating mothers as well as pregnant women, so the entitlement continues into the breastfeeding period as recorded at the Anganwadi centre.
What is Poshan Sudha meant to achieve?
Poshan Sudha targets three outcomes stated by the Women and Child Development Department — fewer low-birth-weight babies, better nutritional status for mother and child, and lower maternal and infant mortality.
Who should a beneficiary complain to if the meal is not served?
Raise it first with the Anganwadi worker and the ICDS supervisor for the centre, then with the Child Development Project Officer of the block. The District Programme Officer under the Women and Child Development Department is the next level.
