What is the Rock Climbing Adventure Training Course?
Rock Climbing Adventure Training Course is an adventure activity programme of the Sports Authority of Gujarat, which functions under the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat. According to the department's own portal, it was constituted as a separate administrative department in 1990 and renamed in 1997 to bring sports under the same umbrella as youth and cultural activities. The Sports Authority of Gujarat is one of its subordinate organisations, alongside Swarnima Gujarat Sports University and the state academies.
The course is a short, instructor-led camp that introduces students to rock climbing on natural rock faces or artificial walls. It is not a competitive sport programme and it does not lead to selection for a team. It is a youth development activity, and the stated purpose is physical fitness, adventure awareness and confidence.
What participants learn
- Rope work; knots, coiling, anchoring and rope care.
- Belaying and rappelling. The two techniques that make climbing safe, taught before any climbing is attempted.
- Climbing technique: footwork, balance, hand holds, and moving on rock with three points of contact.
- Safety discipline, helmet and harness checks, signal calls between climber and belayer, and what to do when something goes wrong.
- Camp craft and group discipline, where the camp is residential.
Why the state runs it
Adventure training is used across Indian youth programmes for the same reason: it produces a measurable change in confidence in a very short time. A student who has rappelled down a rock face has done something they believed they could not do, in front of their peers, and has had to trust a partner holding their rope to do it. That is difficult to reproduce in a classroom.
Who is eligible for the Rock Climbing Adventure Training Course?
You can join if:
- You are a student of a school or college in Gujarat, or a youth enrolled through a district youth or sports office.
- You fall within the age band announced for that camp, batches are run in age groups, and the band is stated in the announcement.
- You are medically fit for physical adventure activity, certified by a registered medical practitioner.
- You have written consent from a parent or guardian, which is compulsory for anyone under 18.
- You can attend the full duration of the camp. Partial attendance is not normally allowed, because the safety syllabus is sequential.
You cannot join if:
- You are outside the announced age band for the batch.
- You cannot produce a medical fitness certificate. This is not a formality — the activity involves height, exertion and sustained grip.
- You are a minor and the consent form is unsigned.
- You have a condition that makes height or exertion unsafe. Participants with cardiac, spinal, major joint or seizure conditions are ordinarily not eligible, and the medical certificate is where this is caught.
- The batch is already full. Camps run with a fixed instructor-to-student ratio for safety, so seats are genuinely limited and are not expanded.
What documents are required?

How to apply for the Rock Climbing Adventure Training Course
- Watch for the camp announcement. Camps are circulated to schools, colleges, NSS and NCC units and district sports offices rather than advertised continuously. Ask your physical education teacher or NSS programme officer to flag the next one.
- Approach the right desk. The usual routes are your school or college sports teacher, your NSS or NCC unit, or the District Sports Officer of the Sports Authority of Gujarat in your district. Institutions normally nominate students against the seats allotted to them.
- Fill the enrolment form with your personal details, age, institution and emergency contact, and get it signed by your institution head.
- Get the medical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner, and have a parent or guardian sign the consent form if you are under 18.
- Submit the form with all documents by the date given in the announcement. Seats are limited by the safety instructor ratio, so late forms are not accommodated.
- Attend the pre-camp briefing if one is held, and carry the kit list items, ordinarily sports shoes, track clothing, a water bottle and personal medication.
- Complete the full camp and collect the participation certificate at the end.
There is no standing online application portal for this course. Enrolment runs through institutions and district offices.
What does the department provide?
The Sports Authority of Gujarat provides the trained instructors, the technical equipment; ropes, harnesses, helmets, carabiners and descenders, and the safety supervision. Camps run by the state are free or heavily subsidised; where a nominal contribution towards food or lodging is asked for, it is stated in the camp announcement. Participants are not expected to buy climbing gear.
Where to get help

Enrolment through an institution or a district sports office is free of any agent's fee. Any charge beyond the contribution named in the camp announcement itself should be questioned with the District Sports Officer.
