What is the Sharodotsav Pandit Nandan Mehta scheme?

Sharodotsav Pandit Nandan Mehta is a scheme of the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi under which the Akademi conducts a classical music competition and an accompanying ceremony or concert in memory of Pandit Nandan Mehta. The Akademi was given autonomous status by the Government of Gujarat from 1 September 1992 and functions under the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, with its office at Block 14, 2nd floor, Dr Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Sector 10-A, Gandhinagar 382010.

This guide is deliberately short, because the Akademi has published very little about this particular scheme. What follows is what can actually be verified on official Gujarat sources, and an explicit note of what cannot.

• The Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi runs a set of schemes that fund competitions and festivals rather than pay benefits to individuals. Its published scheme list includes divisional and state-level three-act drama competitions, drama training camps, production assistance for Turi Barot theatre under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan, and classical music festivals held in memory of named musicians.
• The Akademi's stated purpose is the development of music, dance, theatre and folk art in Gujarat, planned with the involvement of experts and practitioners in those fields.
• Pandit Nandan Mehta, 26 February 1942 to 26 March 2010, was a tabla player and teacher of the Benaras gharana from Ahmedabad. He founded the Saptak School of Music and, in 1980, the Saptak Annual Festival of Music, which is why Gujarat's classical music calendar carries events in his name.
• Separately from the Akademi's own scheme, Saptak, in association with the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi, organises an all-India tabla and pakhawaj competition each February in his memory, the Pt Nandan Mehta Shastriya Taal-Vadya Spardha, followed by a recital by established artists and judged by a panel of well-known performers.

• Age bands, categories such as vocal or instrumental, or the number of contestants selected.
• An entry fee, if any.
• A fixed annual date or application window for the Akademi's own edition.

Who can take part, and who cannot apply?

You can take part if you are a classical music performer responding to a competition announcement issued by the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi or by the institution partnering with it, and you meet the age, category and residence conditions stated in that specific announcement. The Akademi's state-level competitions are ordinarily open to residents of Gujarat, while the associated Saptak tabla and pakhawaj competition is described as an all-India level event.

You cannot apply, and are not eligible, if you are looking for a personal grant, scholarship, pension or monthly assistance. Sharodotsav Pandit Nandan Mehta is an event scheme, not an individual entitlement. Contact the Akademi office at Block 14, 2nd floor, Dr Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Sector 10-A, Gandhinagar 382010, and ask whether the Sharodotsav Pandit Nandan Mehta competition is being held in the current year and on what terms. This is the only reliable way to get the entry conditions, since they are not published as a standing document.
3. Obtain and fill the entry form issued with that announcement, attaching whatever proof of age and residence the announcement asks for, and submit it before the closing date stated in the announcement.
4. For the Saptak-organised tabla and pakhawaj competition, which is held in association with the Akademi each February, follow the entry process announced by Saptak for that edition.
