What is the Sindhu Darshan Scheme?

The Sindhu Darshan Scheme is a pilgrimage assistance scheme of the Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board (GPYVB), the holy-pilgrimage development board that sits under the state Tourism Department. Gujarat announced the scheme in 2017 to help residents of the state travel to Leh in Ladakh for the Sindhu Darshan Yatra. The festival held on the banks of the Indus, the Sindhu, which is treated as a journey of national and cultural unity as much as a religious one.

The Sindhu Darshan Scheme pays Rs 15,000 to an eligible pilgrim after the yatra is completed. The assistance is a reimbursement, so the pilgrim books and pays for the trip and then claims the fixed amount from the Board with proof that the yatra actually happened.

Since 2017 the Sindhu Darshan Yojana has assisted 1,754 pilgrims with a total of about Rs 2.63 crore, according to figures released by the Gujarat government alongside its other pilgrimage schemes.

Who is eligible for the Sindhu Darshan Scheme?

You can apply if:

• You are a native or resident of Gujarat and can prove it with a voter ID, ration card or domicile document.
• You have actually completed the Sindhu Darshan Yatra at Leh and can show documentary proof from the authorised travel agent or organiser.
• You are filing the claim within 60 days of completing the yatra.
• You have not previously received assistance under this scheme.
• You hold a bank account in your own name for the transfer.

You cannot apply if:

• You are not a resident of Gujarat. The scheme is limited to the state's own residents, and pilgrims from other states are not eligible.
• You have not yet travelled. An intention to go on the yatra does not create a claim; only a completed yatra does.
• You are filing more than 60 days after the yatra ended.
• You have already drawn the Rs 15,000 once, in an earlier year.
• You cannot produce organiser confirmation or travel documents linking you by name to the yatra dates.

The scheme has no published age bar, no income ceiling and no caste or category restriction. What it tests is residence, genuine completion of the yatra and timeliness of the claim.

What documents are required for the Sindhu Darshan Scheme?

Self-attest every photocopy. Because the claim is decided on paper at Gandhinagar and not across a counter, a blurred passbook page or an organiser letter without dates is enough to stall a file.

How to apply for the Sindhu Darshan Scheme

1. Complete the Sindhu Darshan Yatra first. Book through an authorised travel agent or recognised organiser and keep every ticket, invoice and receipt from the journey.
2. Collect written proof of completion from the organiser before you leave Leh. A certificate or letter naming each pilgrim and stating the yatra dates.
3. Download and print the prescribed application form from the Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board website at yatradham.gujarat.gov.in, or collect it from the Board's office in Gandhinagar.
4. Fill in all mandatory fields, including the details of the authorised travel agent or organiser and the details of every pilgrim in the claim.
5. Attach self-attested copies of residence proof, photo ID, yatra completion proof, travel documents and the bank passbook page.
6. Submit the completed application to the Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board within 60 days of the yatra, in person or by post, and keep a photocopy of the whole set for your own record.
7. Wait for verification and, if applicable, the draw. The Board checks residence and yatra proof, and where claims exceed the annual limit of about 300 pilgrims a draw decides the beneficiaries.
8. Receive the Rs 15,000 in the bank account named in the form.

How to apply offline at the Board office

1. Visit the Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board, Block 2 and 3, 1st floor, Dr Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Gandhinagar, during office hours.
2. Ask for the current Sindhu Darshan application format and the list of annexures for the year you travelled.
3. Hand over the filled form with annexures and obtain an inward or acknowledgement number.

Offline submission is the operative route for this scheme. The Board's website carries the scheme notices: including notices about assistance payments for particular yatra years — and applicant login pages, so check it before travelling to Gandhinagar in case a notice has changed the format.

How much benefit does the Sindhu Darshan Scheme provide?

The scheme provides a flat Rs 15,000 per approved pilgrim, paid once. The amount does not scale with the actual cost of the trip, with the number of days spent in Ladakh or with the mode of travel. A pilgrim who spends Rs 60,000 on the journey and one who spends Rs 25,000 both receive the same Rs 15,000.

Where a family travels together, each family member files as an individual pilgrim, and each approved pilgrim counts separately against the annual ceiling of roughly 300. Payment is made by transfer to the bank account given in the form, which is why the passbook copy is treated as a mandatory annexure rather than a formality.

How to check your Sindhu Darshan application status

1. Keep the inward or acknowledgement number issued when the form was submitted.
2. Check yatradham.gujarat.gov.in for notices about assistance payments for your yatra year. The Board publishes these when a batch is cleared.
3. Use the applicant login on the Board's website if a login was created for your application round.

Common reasons Sindhu Darshan claims are rejected

• Filed after the 60-day window. This is the most common and the least fixable reason.
• No proof of completion from an authorised organiser, or a letter that does not name the pilgrim.
• Residence not established. An address in Gujarat on a private document is not the same as a voter ID, ration card or domicile proof.
• Name mismatch between the ID, the organiser certificate and the bank account.
• Repeat claim by a pilgrim who has already received the benefit.
• Bank details unreadable or wrong IFSC, which stops the transfer even after approval.
• Not selected in the draw for a year in which claims exceeded the ceiling. This is not a rejection on merit, and the Board's notice for that year will say so.

Key dates to remember

The Sindhu Darshan Yatra itself is held around the Ladakh festival season in the middle of the year, so claims typically cluster in the months that follow. The one date that binds every applicant is the 60-day claim deadline counted from the completion of the yatra. The annual ceiling of about 300 pilgrims is counted per financial year, so travelling early in a financial year usually means facing a shorter queue than travelling late.

No application fee is payable, and no travel agent can charge you for "getting the Rs 15,000 sanctioned". The Board pays the pilgrim, not the agent, and an agent's only legitimate role in the process is issuing the yatra completion certificate.
