What is the Special Scholarship to SC Students in Selected Schools?

The Special Scholarship to SC Students in Selected Schools; recorded by the Gujarat government under the scheme code BCK-3 and titled in Gujarati as financial assistance to Scheduled Caste students for study in renowned private schools; is run by the Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare under Gujarat's Social Justice and Empowerment Department.

According to the Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare, the scheme's object is to provide economic support so that Scheduled Caste students can pursue education at prestigious private institutions. The assistance is up to Rs 50,000 or the actual expenses incurred, whichever is lower, and it is granted once per student, at the point of admission.

This is a deliberately narrow scheme. It is not a general school scholarship: Gujarat already runs the Pre-SSC Parixitlal Majmudar Scholarship for every SC student from Class 1 to Class 10 with no income limit. The Special Scholarship exists for a specific and much smaller group: SC children who win a place at a nationally reputed private school, most famously the Doon School, and whose families cannot meet the entry cost on their own.

Who is eligible for the Special Scholarship in selected schools?

A student can receive the assistance if:

• The student belongs to a Scheduled Caste notified for Gujarat and holds a valid caste certificate.
• The student has secured admission to an approved renowned private school on the directorate's list.
• Annual family income does not exceed Rs 6,00,000. The same figure applies whether the family lives in a village or a city.
• The student is entering Class 8 or Class 11. The Director's page also allows Class 6 entry specifically at Balaji School, Jamnagar and the NDA school at Kherwara.
• The student has not previously drawn this assistance.

A student is not eligible if:

• The student is not from a Scheduled Caste. Scheduled Tribe, Socially and Educationally Backward Class and Economically Weaker Section students are covered by separate directorates within the same department.
• Family income exceeds Rs 6,00,000 a year. There is no relaxation of this ceiling published for this scheme.
• The school is not on the approved list. A private school being expensive is not the test; being notified by the directorate is.
• The student is applying at a class other than the admission class, for example in Class 9 or Class 12, mid-course.
• The student has already received the single disbursement at an earlier admission.
• The claimed expense cannot be evidenced by a school fee receipt or fee structure, because the benefit is capped at actual expenses.

How much does the scheme pay, and when?

The ceiling is Rs 50,000, and the operative rule is whichever is lower — Rs 50,000 or actual expenditure. A family whose evidenced expense for the year of admission is Rs 38,000 receives Rs 38,000, not Rs 50,000.

Payment is a single disbursement. There is no annual renewal and no second instalment in later years of the same course. Because leading residential schools charge fees well above Rs 50,000, this assistance is realistically a contribution towards the admission-year burden: uniform, books, travel, deposit and part of the fee: rather than a full sponsorship. Families should plan the remaining cost before accepting a place.

How to apply for the Special Scholarship to SC Students in Selected Schools

1. Secure admission first. The scheme is triggered by admission to an approved renowned private school at Class 8 or Class 11 (or Class 6 at Balaji School, Jamnagar and the NDA school, Kherwara). Without an admission letter there is nothing to apply on.
2. Confirm the school is on the approved list. Ask the district Deputy Director (Scheduled Caste Welfare) for the current notified list before you commit money, because a school outside the list makes the application ineligible however reputed it is.
3. Obtain a fresh caste certificate and income certificate. The income certificate must show annual family income of Rs 6,00,000 or below; an old certificate from a previous year is often rejected.
4. Collect the prescribed application form from the district Deputy Director (Scheduled Caste Welfare) office or from the office of the Director, Scheduled Caste Welfare, Gandhinagar.
5. Fill the form and attach every document, including the school's admission letter and its fee receipt or fee structure, which is what fixes the amount sanctioned.
6. Submit the application at the district Deputy Director (Scheduled Caste Welfare) office for your district, or at the Director's office in Gandhinagar. Take an acknowledgement with a date stamp.
7. Follow up with the district office for the sanction order, and check that the bank account named in the form is active so the transfer does not fail.

How do I check my application status?

Because this scheme runs on paper rather than through Digital Gujarat, status is checked in person or by telephone:

1. Quote the acknowledgement number and date from the receipt you were given at submission.
2. Contact the district Deputy Director (Scheduled Caste Welfare) office where the form was filed.
3. Escalate to the Director, Scheduled Caste Welfare, Block No. 4, Second Floor, Dr Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Gandhinagar, on +91 79 23253229 or 23253235.

Keep photocopies of the whole file. A paper application that goes missing between the district and the directorate is far easier to reconstruct if you can hand over a duplicate set the same day.

Why applications get rejected

• School not on the approved list. The most common and least recoverable reason. Verify before admission, not after.
• Income above Rs 6,00,000, or an income certificate that is out of date.
• Applying in a non-admission class. The scheme attaches to admission, so a student already in Class 9 cannot claim retrospectively.
• Assistance already drawn once. Records are checked at district level.
• No fee receipt, leaving the district office with no basis to compute "actual expenses" and therefore no sanctionable amount.
• Name mismatch across the caste certificate, admission letter, Aadhaar card and bank account.
• Bank account inactive or wrongly written, which stops a sanctioned payment at the last step.

What other Gujarat SC education schemes should a family look at?

The Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare runs roughly 35 education schemes. The ones most relevant alongside this scheme are the Pre-SSC Parixitlal Majmudar Scholarship of Rs 750 to Rs 1,000 a year for Classes 1 to 10 with no income limit, Saraswati Sadhna Yojana free bicycles for SC girls in Class 9, the Muni Metraj scholarship for children of sanitation workers, government hostels, the post-SSC and central Post-Matric scholarships from Class 11, coaching support for NEET and JEE, and the Dr B. R. Ambedkar loan scheme for foreign study. A student on this scheme is generally still free to claim the routine Pre-SSC or post-SSC scholarship for the same year, since they cover different costs; confirm with the district office.
