What is the State Post-Matric Scholarship for Disabled Persons?

State Post-Matric Scholarship for Disabled Persons is a Maharashtra state scholarship that pays the education costs of students with disabilities from Class 11 right through to a PhD. The scheme was run for decades by the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance, and after Maharashtra created a separate disability ministry by cabinet decision on 29 November 2022, it now sits with the Persons with Disabilities Welfare Department, commonly called the Divyang Kalyan Vibhag.

The scheme has two parts. First, the state pays the institute the full tuition fee, examination fee and other compulsory fees the student would otherwise pay. Second, the student receives a monthly maintenance allowance in cash, credited to their own bank account. A third, smaller component reimburses project typing expenses of up to Rs 600 a year, which matters for final-year degree and postgraduate students who have to submit bound project reports.

Maharashtra counted about 29.6 lakh persons with disabilities in the 2011 census, roughly 2.63 percent of the state population, spread across the recognised disability categories. This scholarship is the state's main instrument for keeping that group in higher education rather than losing them after Class 10.

Who is eligible for the State Post-Matric Scholarship for Disabled Persons?

You can claim the scholarship if:

• You hold a disability certificate showing 40 percent or more disability from the competent medical authority, or a UDID card generated from it.
• You are domiciled in Maharashtra and can produce a domicile certificate.
• You are studying in Class 11 or above, including diplomas, ITI, degree, professional degree, postgraduate and PhD programmes.
• Your institute is recognised by the Government of Maharashtra or affiliated to a recognised university, and your admission came through the regular admission route, which for professional courses means the CAP process.
• Your bank account is in your own name and seeded with your Aadhaar number.

You are not eligible, and cannot apply, if:

• Your certified disability is below 40 percent.
• You are studying in Class 10 or below. Those students are covered by pre-matric scholarship schemes instead.
• You are not a Maharashtra domicile, even if you are studying in the state.
• Your institute or course is not recognised by the state government or a recognised university.
• You are drawing the Government of India post-matric scholarship for persons with disability for the same academic year. Two post-matric scholarships cannot run together for one year of study.
• You are repeating the same year of the same course. Repeat years are normally refused, and a genuine break needs a gap certificate.

How much does the scholarship pay?

Maintenance allowance is set by course group and by whether you live in a hostel. The rates published for the scheme are:

Alongside the allowance, the department pays 100 percent of the compulsory fees the institute charges, which covers tuition and examination fees. Project typing expenses are reimbursed up to Rs 600 a year. Maintenance allowance is paid for the months of the academic session only, not for all twelve months of the calendar year.

How to apply for the State Post-Matric Scholarship for Disabled Persons

1. Open mahadbt2.maharashtra.gov.in, the MahaDBT 2.0 portal, and switch the language toggle at the top right to English or Marathi.
2. Choose Post-Matric Scholarship, then New Application Registration, and register using your Aadhaar number or enrolment ID. Verify the mobile number and email address with the one-time passwords sent to them.
3. Complete your profile; personal details, address, caste or category, disability details, past qualifications, current course and institute, and bank account. MahaDBT 2.0 auto-fetches much of this from Aadhaar and the CET Cell, so check the pre-filled data rather than retyping it.
4. Upload the scanned documents listed above. Keep each file small, legible and in the format the portal asks for, because unreadable uploads are the commonest reason for a return.
5. Go to All Schemes, filter by the Persons with Disabilities Welfare Department, select State Post-Matric Scholarship for Disabled Persons, and click Apply.
6. Answer the scheme-specific questions, particularly hosteller or day-scholar status, then submit and save the application ID shown on the screen.
7. Visit your college scholarship section with the printout. Your institute must verify the application online before it moves to the district office. An application that is never verified by the college simply expires.

How to apply offline or with help

Maharashtra has not published an offline paper route for this scholarship, so the online application is the only channel. Students who cannot fill the form themselves have three practical options:

1. Use the scholarship section of your own college, which is obliged to verify these applications and in most institutes will help fill them.
2. Visit a Maha e-Seva Kendra or CSC, where an operator can complete the MahaDBT registration for a small notified fee.
3. Contact the District Social Welfare Officer or the district disability rehabilitation centre, which handle scheme queries for the district.

How do I check my application and payment status?

Log in to MahaDBT 2.0 and open Track Application. The screen shows whether your application is pending with the institute, pending with the district office, sanctioned, or rejected with a reason. Once a bill is generated, the payment moves to your Aadhaar-seeded account through Direct Benefit Transfer. If the status says sanctioned but no money has arrived, the problem is almost always at the bank end — an inactive account, a frozen KYC, or Aadhaar seeding that was never completed at the branch.

Why applications get rejected, and how to fix them

• Disability certificate below 40 percent or expired. Renew it at the civil hospital medical board and apply for a UDID card at the same time.
• Name mismatch between Aadhaar, the marksheet and the bank account. Correct the spelling at the bank and on Aadhaar before reapplying.
• Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so DBT cannot land. Ask the branch to seed the account with NPCI, not merely to note the Aadhaar number in the file.
• Institute did not verify the application in time. Follow up in person; this is the single largest cause of silently lost applications.
• Hostel certificate missing, so the lower day-scholar rate was applied.
• Illegible uploads, especially phone photographs of fee receipts.
• Admission outside the regular admission process for a professional course.

Key dates for 2026-27

Maharashtra shifted post-matric scholarship applications to MahaDBT 2.0 from 1 June 2026, and the old portal stopped accepting new applications and renewals on the same date. The 2026-27 application window opened on 1 June 2026, and the state has published 30 September 2026 as the closing date for post-matric applications. Because these dates are extended in some years, check the notice board on the portal home page before assuming the window has closed.
