What is the Gujarat ST poultry subsidy and training scheme?

The Subsidy Scheme on Establishment of 25 R.I.R./Kadaknath & 1000 Broiler Bird's Unit and Stipend for Poultry Farming Training for Scheduled Tribes People of the State is run by the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat, through the Directorate of Animal Husbandry. The scheme is a package of three linked components aimed at one group: adult Scheduled Tribe residents of the state, and it is listed for application on the iKhedut portal.

The three components sit on a deliberate ladder. At the bottom is a 25-bird backyard unit of Rhode Island Red (R.I.R.) or Kadaknath birds supplied in kind, which needs almost no capital from the household and produces eggs and meat for family use and local sale. Alongside it is a training stipend that pays a tribal applicant for the days spent learning to rear poultry. At the top is a 1,000-broiler commercial unit carrying a 90 per cent subsidy, which is a genuine small enterprise rather than a backyard activity.

Rhode Island Red is a hardy dual-purpose breed that survives backyard conditions well. Kadaknath, the black-meat bird from Madhya Pradesh, sells at a substantial premium in niche markets and has been pushed by several states as a higher-value option for tribal households.

How much does the scheme pay?

Three points about this table are easy to misread.

The 25-bird unit is not a cash grant. The department supplies birds and feed; the Rs 6,000 is the ceiling on what the department spends per beneficiary, not money that lands in an account.

The 90 per cent figure on the broiler unit is unusually generous, and it reflects the capital intensity of a 1,000-bird shed with feeders, drinkers, brooding equipment and a biosecure enclosure. The beneficiary still has to fund the remaining 10 per cent and the working capital for feed cycles, which on a project of this size is not a small sum.

The repeat rules are per family, not per person. Two brothers in the same household cannot both take the 1,000-broiler unit.

Who is eligible for this poultry scheme?

You can apply if:

• You are from Gujarat.
• You are an adult and belong to a Scheduled Tribe, evidenced by a caste certificate.
• You have completed poultry rearing training: six days of training for the 25 R.I.R./Kadaknath bird unit and stipend component, and poultry rearing training for the 1,000-broiler unit component.
• You hold a bank account in your own name for the stipend and DBT transfer.

Priority within the eligible pool goes to women applicants and to Below Poverty Line households, so a BPL certificate is worth attaching even though it is not compulsory.

You cannot apply if:

• You are not a Scheduled Tribe applicant. General, OBC and Scheduled Caste applicants are not eligible under this scheme and must look at the poultry components notified for their own category.
• You have not completed the required training. This is the single condition that most often stops an otherwise eligible applicant, because the training certificate is a required document and training happens at fixed centres on a calendar.
• You are a minor.
• Another member of your family has already taken the same component, or you are inside the three-year gap for the 25-bird unit or hold a lifetime-used 1,000-broiler unit.
• You live outside Gujarat.

How to apply for the ST poultry subsidy scheme

1. Complete poultry training first at the Intensive Poultry Development Project or your District Poultry Extension Centre, and collect the training completion certificate. The department states plainly that beneficiaries must complete training before applying.
2. Open the iKhedut portal at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in during the notified application window.
3. Click Schemes (Yojanao), then the Agricultural / Animal Husbandry Schemes list, and locate the poultry component you want. The 25-bird unit, the training stipend or the 1,000-broiler unit.
4. Click Apply, then Apply New, and fill in the application form with your personal details, category, training details and bank account.
5. Use Update Application to correct any field before finalising. Once you confirm, the application is locked.
6. Print the confirmed application, sign it and keep it with photocopies of your caste certificate, training certificate, residence proof and bank passbook for submission as instructed on the portal.
7. Track progress through the Applicant Corner at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in/public/frm_Applicant_Corner.aspx, where you can also view, print or upload documents.

How to check your application status

1. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and go to the Applicant Corner.
2. Enter your application number and registered mobile number.
3. Read whether the application is pending, sanctioned or rejected.
4. If the status does not move for several weeks after the window closes, follow up with the District Poultry Extension Centre or the district animal husbandry office, carrying your printed application and training certificate.

Why applications get rejected

• No training certificate. Training is a precondition, not a formality that can be completed later.
• Caste certificate missing or in a different name from the Aadhaar record.
• Another family member has already drawn the same component, or the three-year gap on the 25-bird unit has not elapsed.
• Bank account name mismatch, which stops the NEFT/RTGS stipend and the DBT subsidy.
• Application confirmed but supporting documents never submitted.
• Annual target exhausted for the district. The 1,000-broiler component carries a large per-unit cost, so the number of units sanctioned in a district in a year is small and competition is real.

One practical warning about the 1,000-broiler unit. A 90 per cent subsidy is not the same as a risk-free business. Broiler farming runs on tight margins, live bird prices swing sharply, and a disease outbreak can wipe out a cycle. Anyone taking the large unit should have a buyer or an integrator arrangement in mind before the shed is built, and should treat the training at the poultry extension centre as the substance of the scheme rather than a certificate to be collected.
