What is Vidhya Sadhana Yojana?

Vidhya Sadhana Yojana is a Gujarat state education-support scheme run by the Tribal Development Department, Government of Gujarat. Under it, a Scheduled Tribe girl who reaches Class 9 in a recognised school in Gujarat is given a bicycle free of cost. The bicycle is a gift, not a loan and not a reimbursement, and the department lists the scheme under "Special Assistance" for tribal students on tribal.gujarat.gov.in.

Vidhya Sadhana Yojana, also written locally as Vidya Sadhna Yojana, exists to answer one specific problem. Primary schools in Gujarat's tribal belts, the eastern districts running from Banaskantha through Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Tapi and the Dangs: are usually inside or next to the village, but secondary schools are not. A girl finishing Class 8 often faces a walk of several kilometres each way to reach Class 9. According to the Tribal Development Department, that distance is one of the largest single causes of girls dropping out at exactly the point where secondary education begins. A bicycle cuts a 45-minute walk to roughly 15 minutes and removes the safety argument families use to keep a daughter at home.

Who is eligible for Vidhya Sadhana Yojana?

You can claim the bicycle if all of the following are true:

• You are a girl student. The scheme has no provision for boys.
• You belong to the Scheduled Tribe category and hold an ST caste certificate issued by a competent authority in Gujarat.
• You are a resident of Gujarat.
• You are studying in Class 9 in a recognised school in the current academic year. Recognition means a school recognised by the Gujarat education authorities; government, grant-in-aid or recognised private.
• Your family's annual income does not exceed Rs 6,00,000. This is the income limit shown on the current scheme record; it applies to total family income from all sources, not just the father's salary.

You cannot apply, or you are not eligible, in these situations:

• You are a boy student, whatever your caste category.
• You belong to the Scheduled Caste, OBC, developing-caste or general category. Those students are not covered here; SC and developing-caste girls should look at Saraswati Sadhana Yojana instead.
• You are in Class 8, Class 10, Class 11 or Class 12. Only the Class 9 year qualifies, and a missed year cannot be claimed later.
• Your family income is above Rs 6,00,000 a year.
• You are studying outside Gujarat, or you are a resident of another state.
• You have already received a bicycle under this scheme or under another government bicycle scheme in the same year. A second claim is treated as a duplicate.
• You have submitted more than one application, whether from one school or from two schools. The department's own instruction is blunt: all such applications are rejected by the competent authority and no representation will be entertained.

What documents are required for Vidhya Sadhana Yojana?

Scan every document carefully before uploading. The department warns that an unreadable uploaded document alone is enough ground for the competent authority to reject an application, and there is no separate correction round once the form is finally submitted.

How to apply for Vidhya Sadhana Yojana online

1. Open the Digital Gujarat portal at digitalgujarat.gov.in.
2. Click Register on the home page, enter your mobile number and email address, set a password, and click Save.
3. Log in with the registered mobile number or email address and the password you set.
4. Open My Profile, fill in every mandatory field, and click Update Profile. The profile is confirmed only after you enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
5. Under Services, select Scholarship Services, then choose the relevant scheme category for tribal students.
6. Select the financial year you are applying for and click Change Financial Year so the form opens against the correct academic session.
7. Select the scheme, read the instructions on screen, and click Continue to Service.
8. Fill the application form completely, upload the caste certificate, income certificate, Aadhaar and photograph, and click Save as Draft.
9. Tick the terms and conditions and click Confirm & Final Submit. Note the application number shown on screen, that number is the only way to track the application later.

Two points trip students up. First, only one application per student is accepted — a second one gets every copy cancelled. Second, students studying inside Gujarat cannot submit the form directly on their own; the application is routed through the institution. Students from Gujarat who are studying outside the state fill the form online themselves and then submit the printed form to their native district officer.

How does the offline route work?

Vidhya Sadhana Yojana is designed as an online scheme, so there is no separate paper application counter that replaces the Digital Gujarat form. In practice, though, most Class 9 girls in tribal talukas never touch the portal themselves.

1. The school collects caste certificates, income certificates, Aadhaar copies and photographs from all eligible Class 9 ST girls at the start of the academic year.
2. The school clerk or principal enters and uploads each student's details on Digital Gujarat and submits the applications as a batch.
3. The district Tribal Development office verifies the caste and income documents and approves the eligible list.
4. Bicycles are procured centrally and handed over at the school in a distribution function, usually a few weeks to a few months after approval.

If your school has not started the process, take your documents to the school office first, and to the District Tribal Development Officer or the Project Administrator, Integrated Tribal Development Project, only if the school does not act.

How do you check your Vidhya Sadhana Yojana application status?

1. Log in to digitalgujarat.gov.in with the mobile number and password used for the application.
2. Open the My Applications or application-status section of your dashboard.
3. Enter or select your application number to see whether the form is pending at the school, pending at the district office, approved, or rejected.
4. If the status is unclear, ask your school office to check the institutional login, which shows the district-level remarks that the student view often does not.

Approval on the portal is not the same as delivery. Bicycles are bought through a state procurement process, so a gap of several weeks between "approved" status and the distribution function at your school is normal and does not mean anything has gone wrong.

Why do Vidhya Sadhana Yojana applications get rejected?

• Duplicate applications, the single most avoidable cause. One student, one application, one school.
• Unreadable scans, especially faint photocopies of caste certificates.
• Income certificate above Rs 6,00,000, or an income certificate that has expired.
• Caste certificate in the wrong category, an OBC or SC certificate cannot be used for a Tribal Development Department scheme.
• Wrong class. An application filed while the student is in Class 8 or has already moved to Class 10.
• Wrong or misleading information in the form. The department states that incorrect information leads to rejection by the departmental authorities.
• Institution changed after submission, there is no provision to change the institution once the form is submitted successfully, so a mid-year transfer can strand the application.

Most of these are fixable only by applying correctly in the same academic year, because the Class 9 window does not reopen. If your form is rejected early in the year, ask the school to correct the document and file the fresh application before the district list closes.

No fee is payable at any stage of Vidhya Sadhana Yojana. If a school representative, a shopkeeper or an agent asks for money to "get your name on the bicycle list", that is not part of the scheme and should be reported to the District Tribal Development Officer.
