What is Kalyanamastu Pathakam?

Kalyanamastu Pathakam is the Andhra Pradesh government's one-time marriage assistance grant for poor families marrying off a daughter, administered through the Backward Classes Welfare Department along with the Social Welfare, Tribal Welfare and Disabled Welfare departments for their respective categories. Kalyanamastu, meaning "may the marriage be auspicious" in Telugu, was designed to meet the immediate cost of a wedding for a household that would otherwise borrow from a moneylender at ruinous interest.

Kalyanamastu is the companion scheme to Shaadi Tohfa, which covers brides from the Muslim community under the Minorities Welfare Department. The two run on identical eligibility conditions and the same application route, and the state has historically released the payments together, for example a combined release of Rs 78.53 crore on 20 February under the two schemes, and an earlier combined disbursement of Rs 142 crore reported in the national press.

Main features

  • One-time cash grant paid on marriage, not a recurring benefit.
  • Amount varies by the bride's social category and by disability status.
  • Paid by DBT into the bride's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
  • Conditional on both bride and groom having passed Class 10, and on the bride being at least 18 and the groom at least 21.
  • Must be claimed within 60 days of the marriage.
  • Applied for free at the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam; no agent is involved.

How much does Kalyanamastu Pathakam pay?

Category of bride Grant
Scheduled Caste Rs 1,00,000
Scheduled Tribe Rs 1,00,000
Backward Classes Rs 50,000
Differently abled bride or groom Rs 1,50,000
Inter-caste marriage, SC or ST Rs 1,20,000
Inter-caste marriage, BC Rs 75,000

These are the category-wise amounts notified under the scheme guidelines. Because Andhra Pradesh revises welfare rates by government order, confirm the amount applicable on your date of marriage at the Sachivalayam before you plan around it. Economically Backward Class and registered construction worker categories are also brought within the scheme, at rates notified separately for those groups.

Who is eligible for Kalyanamastu Pathakam?

A family can claim the grant if:

  • The bride is a resident of Andhra Pradesh from an SC, ST, Backward Class, Economically Backward Class, differently-abled or registered construction worker household.
  • The bride has completed 18 years and the groom 21 years on the date of marriage.
  • Both bride and groom have passed Class 10.
  • Household income is within the ceiling, the figure used across Andhra Pradesh welfare schemes is under Rs 10,000 a month in rural areas and under Rs 12,000 a month in urban areas.
  • Land holding is within the ceiling, expressed as under 3 acres of wet land or under 10 acres of dry land.
  • The marriage is registered and the application is filed within 60 days of it.
  • The bride holds an Aadhaar-seeded bank account in her own name.

A family cannot apply, or will be found not eligible, if:

  • Either the bride or the groom has not passed Class 10.
  • The bride is under 18 or the groom under 21 on the date of marriage.
  • The application is filed more than 60 days after the marriage.
  • Any household member is a government employee, a government pensioner or an income tax payer.
  • The household owns a four-wheeler other than a taxi, tractor or auto used for a livelihood.
  • Monthly electricity consumption exceeds 300 units, or the family owns residential or commercial property of 1,000 sq ft or more in a municipal area.
  • The marriage is a second marriage for either party, other than the remarriage of a widow.
  • The bride belongs to the Muslim community, that case is covered by Shaadi Tohfa, not by Kalyanamastu, and a family cannot draw both.

How to apply for Kalyanamastu Pathakam

  1. Register the marriage immediately after the wedding at the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam or with the local registrar, and collect the marriage certificate. Everything else depends on this date.
  2. Open an Aadhaar-seeded bank account in the bride's name if she does not already have one, and ask the branch to confirm NPCI mapping so that DBT can reach it.
  3. Collect the supporting documents — caste certificate, income certificate, Class 10 certificates of both bride and groom, Aadhaar cards and age proof.
  4. Go to the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam within 60 days of the marriage and ask the Welfare and Education Assistant to file the Kalyanamastu application. The same application can be filed through the state's beneficiary management portal.
  5. Collect the acknowledgement with the application number, and keep it; every follow-up and grievance uses that number.
  6. Complete field verification. The volunteer and Sachivalayam staff visit to confirm that the marriage took place and that the household details are correct, and a sanction follows from the concerned welfare department.
  7. Check the credit in the bride's passbook after the sanction. Payments are normally released in batches rather than individually.

How to check your Kalyanamastu application status

  1. Return to the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam with the application number and ask the Digital Assistant to look up the record on the departmental login.
  2. Use the state beneficiary management portal at bm-sgsw.ap.gov.in to search your application, where the service is available for your district.
  3. Check the bride's bank passbook for a DBT credit, since sanction and payment can be separated by weeks.
  4. Escalate to the Mandal or Municipal welfare officer of the department that corresponds to your category, Backward Classes Welfare, Social Welfare, Tribal Welfare or Disabled Welfare.

Why do Kalyanamastu applications get rejected?

  • Class 10 not passed by one of the two parties. This is the most common rejection and there is no way to cure it after the fact.
  • Application filed after 60 days from the date of marriage.
  • Marriage not registered, so the date of marriage cannot be established.
  • Age below the threshold for the bride or the groom.
  • Household eligibility test failed on income, land, four-wheeler, electricity units, property size, government service or income tax.
  • Caste certificate missing or in the wrong name, so the slab cannot be fixed.
  • Bank account not in the bride's name or not Aadhaar-seeded, which stops the DBT even after sanction.

Families planning a wedding should assemble the Class 10 certificates, the caste certificate and the bride's bank account before the wedding date, because the 60-day window is short and these three documents take the longest to obtain.

A note on the scheme's current status

Kalyanamastu Pathakam was run as YSR Kalyanamasthu by the previous Andhra Pradesh government, and the amounts and conditions set out above are those from the guidelines issued under that name, together with the reported disbursement releases. Andhra Pradesh has revised and renamed several welfare schemes since June 2024, and marriage assistance has historically been suspended and revived more than once in the state. Before spending money on documents, confirm at your Grama or Ward Sachivalayam that applications are currently being accepted and what the sanctioned rate is for your category.

Help and grievance redressal

  • Andhra Pradesh citizen helpline: 1902
  • Grama or Ward Sachivalayam: application, status and correction
  • Mandal or Municipal welfare officer of the concerned welfare department for appeal against rejection
  • bm-sgsw.ap.gov.in, the state's beneficiary management portal

Kalyanamastu applications are free. No volunteer, agent or middleman may charge a fee to file or sanction a marriage grant, and no official will ask for the bride's Aadhaar OTP or bank PIN.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kalyanamastu Pathakam pay?

Kalyanamastu pays a one-time grant that varies by category — Rs 1 lakh each for SC and ST brides, Rs 50,000 for Backward Classes, and Rs 1.5 lakh where the bride or groom is differently abled. For inter-caste marriages the reported amounts are Rs 1.2 lakh for SC and ST and Rs 75,000 for BC.

When must I apply for Kalyanamastu?

Apply within 60 days of the date of marriage. Applications filed after the 60-day window are rejected on time-bar grounds regardless of eligibility, so register the marriage promptly and file at the Sachivalayam immediately afterwards.

Is passing Class 10 compulsory for Kalyanamastu?

Yes. Both the bride and the groom must have passed Class 10 for the marriage grant to be sanctioned. This education condition was built into the scheme deliberately to discourage early marriage, and it is the commonest reason for rejection.

What are the age limits under Kalyanamastu?

The bride must have completed 18 years and the groom 21 years on the date of marriage. A marriage below these ages is not merely ineligible, it is illegal under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, and the application will be rejected and reported.

Who gets the money — the bride or her parents?

The grant is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer into the bride's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account. Keeping the money in the bride's name is a design choice of the scheme, so the account must be opened and seeded before the application is filed.

Can a second marriage be covered under Kalyanamastu?

No. The grant is for a first marriage only, with an exception recognised for widows remarrying. A second marriage by either party otherwise makes the application ineligible.

Where do I apply for Kalyanamastu?

Apply at your Grama or Ward Sachivalayam, which is the single-window point for all Andhra Pradesh welfare schemes, or through the state's beneficiary management portal. There is no application fee at any stage.

Is Kalyanamastu the same as YSR Kalyanamasthu?

Yes, it is the same marriage assistance scheme; the "YSR" prefix was used by the previous Andhra Pradesh government and the scheme is now referred to as Kalyanamastu Pathakam. The category-wise amounts and conditions described here are those notified under the earlier guidelines, so confirm the current rates at your Sachivalayam before applying.
