What is the Shaadi Tohfa Scheme?

Shaadi Tohfa is the Andhra Pradesh government's one-time marriage assistance grant for brides from poor minority families, administered by the Minorities Welfare Department through the Grama and Ward Sachivalayam network. Shaadi Tohfa, literally "a gift for the wedding", pays Rs 1,00,000 to help a family meet the cost of a daughter's marriage without falling into debt.

Shaadi Tohfa is the minority-community counterpart to Kalyanamastu, which covers SC, ST, Backward Class, Economically Backward Class and differently-abled brides. The two schemes share the same conditions, the same 60-day window and the same application route, and the state has released their payments together, a combined release of Rs 78.53 crore on 20 February under the two schemes, and an earlier combined disbursement of Rs 142 crore reported nationally.

Main features

  • Flat one-time grant of Rs 1,00,000 for an eligible minority bride.
  • Credited by Direct Benefit Transfer to the bride's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
  • Conditional on both bride and groom having passed Class 10.
  • Bride must be at least 18 and groom at least 21 on the marriage date.
  • Claim must be filed within 60 days of the marriage.
  • Application is free at the Sachivalayam; no agent is involved at any stage.

Who is eligible for Shaadi Tohfa?

A family can claim the grant if:

  • The bride is a resident of Andhra Pradesh and belongs to a notified minority community; the scheme is framed primarily around Muslim brides.
  • The bride has completed 18 years and the groom 21 years on the date of marriage.
  • Both bride and groom have passed Class 10.
  • Household income is less than Rs 10,000 a month in rural areas or less than Rs 12,000 a month in urban areas.
  • The family's land holding is within the ceiling; under 3 acres of wet land or under 10 acres of dry land.
  • The marriage is registered and the application is filed within 60 days.
  • The bride has an Aadhaar-seeded bank account in her own name.

A family cannot apply, or will be found not eligible, if:

  • Either party has not passed Class 10.
  • The bride is under 18 or the groom under 21 on the marriage date.
  • The claim is filed later than 60 days after the marriage.
  • Any family member is a government employee, a government pensioner or a public sector undertaking employee.
  • Any family member is an income tax payer.
  • The family owns a four-wheeler, other than a taxi, tractor or auto used for a livelihood.
  • Monthly electricity consumption is 300 units or more.
  • The family owns residential or commercial property of 1,000 sq ft or more.
  • The marriage is a second marriage for either party, except where a widow remarries.
  • The bride's family has already drawn Kalyanamastu for the same marriage; a family cannot claim under both schemes.

The income, land, vehicle, electricity and property tests are the standard household screens Andhra Pradesh applies across its welfare schemes, drawn from the household database maintained at the Sachivalayam. If your household has been found ineligible for another state scheme on one of these tests, expect the same result here until that record is corrected.

How to apply for Shaadi Tohfa

  1. Register the marriage at the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam or with the local registrar as soon as the wedding is over, and collect the certificate. The 60-day window runs from the date of marriage, not the date of registration.
  2. Open a bank account in the bride's own name and have the branch seed her Aadhaar and confirm NPCI mapping, so the DBT credit does not fail later.
  3. Collect the supporting papers, minority community certificate, income certificate, Class 10 certificates of both bride and groom, Aadhaar cards, age proof and the rice card.
  4. File the application within 60 days at the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam, where the Welfare and Education Assistant enters it, or online through the state's beneficiary management portal.
  5. Collect the acknowledgement with the application number and keep it safe.
  6. Complete field verification by the village or ward volunteer and Sachivalayam staff, who confirm the marriage and the household details.
  7. Watch the bride's passbook for the DBT credit once the Minorities Welfare Department releases the sanction, which is normally done in batches.

How to apply offline at the Sachivalayam

  1. Visit your Grama or Ward Sachivalayam with the complete document set and both bride and groom, if possible, for identity verification.
  2. Ask the Welfare and Education Assistant to file a Shaadi Tohfa application under the Minorities Welfare Department. The service is free.
  3. Have the assistant read back the entered details, the bride's Aadhaar, bank account number and the date of marriage are the three fields that most often carry a typing error.
  4. Take the printed acknowledgement and note the application number.

How to check Shaadi Tohfa application status

  1. Ask the Digital Assistant at your Sachivalayam to open your application number on the departmental login and read out the current stage.
  2. Search on the state beneficiary management portal at bm-sgsw.ap.gov.in where the service is available for your district.
  3. Check the bride's bank passbook or account statement; sanction and credit can be weeks apart.
  4. Escalate to the District Minorities Welfare Officer if the application has sat at one stage for more than a couple of months.

Why do Shaadi Tohfa applications get rejected?

  • Class 10 not passed by the bride or the groom, the single most common rejection reason, and one that cannot be cured after the marriage.
  • Application filed beyond the 60-day window.
  • Marriage not registered, leaving no official date of marriage on record.
  • Age shortfall for the bride or the groom on the marriage date.
  • Household screen failed on income, land, four-wheeler, 300-unit electricity, 1,000 sq ft property, government service or income tax.
  • Bank account not in the bride's name, or seeded to Aadhaar but not NPCI-mapped, so the DBT credit bounces even after sanction.
  • Duplicate claim where the family has also applied under Kalyanamastu.

The practical lesson is that the three slow documents — the Class 10 certificates of both parties, the minority community certificate and the bride's Aadhaar-seeded bank account; should be arranged before the wedding, because 60 days is not enough time to obtain them from scratch.

A note on the scheme's current status

Shaadi Tohfa ran as YSR Shaadi Tohfa under the previous Andhra Pradesh government, and the Rs 1,00,000 grant, the 60-day rule and the Class 10 condition described here come from those published guidelines and from the state's reported disbursement releases. Andhra Pradesh renamed and reworked a number of welfare schemes after the change of government in June 2024, and marriage assistance in the state has been suspended and revived before. Confirm at your Grama or Ward Sachivalayam that applications are open, and what the current sanctioned amount is, before you incur cost on certificates.

Help and grievance redressal

  • Andhra Pradesh citizen helpline: 1902
  • Grama or Ward Sachivalayam: application, correction and status
  • District Minorities Welfare Officer: appeal against rejection and delay

Shaadi Tohfa carries no application fee. No agent, volunteer or middleman may charge to file or sanction the grant, and no official will ask for the bride's Aadhaar OTP or bank PIN over the telephone.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shaadi Tohfa pay?

Shaadi Tohfa provides a one-time grant of Rs 1,00,000 for the marriage of an eligible bride from a poor minority family in Andhra Pradesh. The amount is released by Direct Benefit Transfer into the bride's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account after verification.

When must I apply for Shaadi Tohfa?

It is mandatory to apply within 60 days of the marriage. Register the marriage first, then file at the Grama or Ward Sachivalayam or through the state beneficiary management portal. A claim filed after 60 days is rejected as time-barred whatever the merits.

Do both bride and groom need to have passed Class 10?

Yes. Both the bride and the groom must have passed Class 10 for the Shaadi Tohfa grant to be sanctioned. The education condition was written into the scheme to discourage early marriage and is applied strictly.

What is the income limit for Shaadi Tohfa?

Household income must be less than Rs 10,000 a month in rural areas and less than Rs 12,000 a month in urban areas. Additional asset tests apply on land, four-wheelers, electricity consumption and property size.

Can a widow remarrying claim Shaadi Tohfa?

Yes. The scheme is confined to a first marriage, but the remarriage of a widow is treated as an exception and remains eligible. A second marriage in other circumstances is not covered.

Who receives the Shaadi Tohfa money?

The bride receives it. The grant is credited to the bride's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account, so that account must exist and be NPCI-mapped before the application is filed. Payment into a parent's or the groom's account is not allowed.

How is Shaadi Tohfa different from Kalyanamastu?

Shaadi Tohfa covers brides from minority communities under the Minorities Welfare Department, while Kalyanamastu covers SC, ST, Backward Class, Economically Backward Class and differently-abled brides under the respective welfare departments. The conditions and the application route are the same, and a family can claim under only one of the two.

Is the Shaadi Tohfa scheme still open?

Shaadi Tohfa was run as YSR Shaadi Tohfa under the previous state government, and the conditions and the Rs 1,00,000 amount described here come from those guidelines. Andhra Pradesh has renamed and revised several welfare schemes since June 2024, so confirm at your Grama or Ward Sachivalayam that applications are currently being accepted before spending on documents.
