What is the trellise mandap scheme in Gujarat?

Assistance in Trellise Mandap for Cultivation of Vegetable Crops is a horticulture component run by the Directorate of Horticulture under the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat. The component pays a share of the cost of putting up a mandap, an overhead trellis of poles and wire on which vine vegetables are trained to grow: on the farmer's own field. The Gujarati name farmers search for is simply mandap sahay yojana.

Vine vegetables such as bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ivy gourd (tindora), parwal and ridge gourd crawl along the ground if they are not supported. Fruit lying on wet soil rots, is eaten by pests, and is graded down at the market. Lifting the vine onto a mandap keeps the fruit hanging clean in the air, makes spraying and harvesting easier, and stretches the picking season. The Directorate of Horticulture supports three grades of structure: kaccha (temporary, wooden or bamboo poles), semi-pucca (part-permanent, heavier poles with GI wire), and pucca (permanent, with concrete or steel poles).

The component is delivered through Gujarat's single farm-subsidy portal, iKhedut (ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in), which since the iKhedut 2.0 revamp carries schemes of the agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, water conservation and co-operation wings on one dashboard. Mandap assistance is also funded outside the horticulture budget in tribal blocks: the Gujarat outcome budget for 2026-27 shows a separate Mandap Sahay line of Rs 6.50 crore for 4,450 beneficiaries under the Tribal Development Department, which is why farmers in Dahod, Valsad, Narmada and the Dangs sometimes apply through the tribal route instead.

Who is eligible for mandap assistance?

You can claim the subsidy if:

  • You are a farmer in Gujarat cultivating land recorded in your name in the 7/12 and 8-A village forms, or you hold a valid cultivation right on it.
  • You are growing vine vegetables on the plot for which the mandap is claimed.
  • Your claim is within 2.0 hectares per account, the ceiling published in the component conditions.
  • You have not already exhausted the lifetime limit on this component (three times in the conditions published in recent iKhedut cycles).
  • You build the structure to the notified specification: roughly 1,600 wooden or bamboo poles and 400 kg of 12 to 18 gauge GI wire per hectare, at about 2.5 metre by 2.5 metre spacing for a semi-pucca mandap.
  • You install micro-irrigation through a GGRC-empanelled agency where the component conditions require it, typically on holdings above 1.0 hectare.

You cannot apply, or will be rejected, if:

  • The land is outside Gujarat or the 7/12 extract does not carry your name.
  • You have already built the mandap before receiving the pre-approval order.
  • You are claiming for field crops, orchard crops or open-field vegetables that do not need a trellis.
  • You claim beyond the 2.0 hectare ceiling or beyond the lifetime frequency cap.
  • You are an institutional landholder rather than a cultivating farmer, unless the year's circular specifically admits farmer producer organisations.

Higher slabs are reserved by category. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe farmers and Devipujak beneficiaries must attach a caste certificate issued by the competent authority; without it the general 50 per cent rate applies.

How much money does the mandap scheme pay?

Assistance is a percentage of a notified unit cost per hectare, not of the bill you actually paid, and it is capped either way. The rates published in recent iKhedut cycles are:

Structure Notified unit cost per hectare General farmer SC / ST farmer Devipujak beneficiary
Kaccha mandap Rs 52,000 50%, max Rs 26,000 75%, max Rs 39,000 90%, max Rs 46,000
Semi-pucca mandap Rs 80,000 50%, max Rs 40,000 75%, max Rs 60,000 90%, max Rs 72,000

Pucca mandaps carry a higher unit cost, and state coverage of the scheme in Valsad district in June 2026 described total assistance of the order of Rs 1.2 lakh for larger permanent structures. Because unit costs and slabs are re-notified each financial year, always read the rate shown against the component inside the live iKhedut application form, that figure, not a news report, is what will be paid.

Payment is made by Direct Benefit Transfer into the applicant's bank account after the structure is built and physically verified by the horticulture staff. There is no cash component and no material is supplied in kind.

How to apply for the trellise mandap subsidy

  1. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and go to Schemes (yojanao), then choose Horticulture (bagayati) schemes to see which components are open today.
  2. Find the trellise mandap component and select Apply (arjee karo). If you have applied before, log in with your existing registration; if not, choose the option for a farmer who is not registered.
  3. Fill the form with your Aadhaar number, mobile number, bank account details, village, survey number, area to be covered and the type of mandap — kaccha, semi-pucca or pucca.
  4. Save the application, then confirm it. An application that is saved but never confirmed is not treated as submitted and cannot be corrected later.
  5. Print the confirmed application, sign it, and attach the 7/12 and 8-A extracts, Aadhaar copy, bank passbook copy and caste certificate if applicable.
  6. Submit the printout with documents to the taluka or district horticulture office (or the office named on your acknowledgement) within the days stated on the print.
  7. Wait for the pre-approval (purva manjuri) order. Only after it is issued should you buy poles and wire and put up the mandap.
  8. Inform the horticulture office when the mandap is complete, keep the purchase bills, and let the staff carry out physical verification. The subsidy is then credited by DBT.

How to apply offline in your village

  1. Visit your village panchayat's Gram Computer Entrepreneur (VCE) or the nearest common service point and ask them to file the iKhedut application on your behalf.
  2. Carry the 7/12 and 8-A extracts, Aadhaar card, bank passbook and caste certificate so the details are typed exactly as they appear on record.
  3. Collect the printed confirmed application, sign it, and hand it in at the taluka horticulture office along with the documents.

Applications outnumber targets in most districts, so selection is made against the district-wise physical target for the year, in many cycles by a draw. Being first in the queue does not by itself guarantee approval.

How do I check my iKhedut application status?

  1. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and choose Check application status.
  2. Enter your application number exactly as printed on the acknowledgement, along with the other detail the page asks for.
  3. Read the stage shown; submitted, verified at taluka, pre-approved, work completed, or payment released.

If the status stays at "submitted" well past the window's close, take the printed application to the taluka horticulture office and ask whether the physical copy reached them; an online application whose signed printout never arrived is the single most common dead end.

Why mandap applications get rejected

  • The printout was never submitted. Online confirmation alone does not complete the application.
  • Work started before pre-approval. Structures built ahead of the purva manjuri order are not eligible.
  • Land record mismatch. The name or survey number on the 7/12 does not match the application.
  • Specification shortfall. Fewer poles, thinner wire or wider spacing than the notified norm shows up at physical verification.
  • Category claimed without proof. A 75 or 90 per cent slab claimed with no caste certificate is re-fixed at 50 per cent or rejected.
  • Ceiling breached. Area above 2.0 hectares, or a repeat claim beyond the lifetime limit.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so the DBT credit fails.

Where to get help

  • iKhedut portal: ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in; scheme list, application and status pages.
  • Taluka or district horticulture officer, the first stop for pre-approval, inspection and payment queries.
  • Directorate of Horticulture, Gujarat: doh.gujarat.gov.in lists head office, regional office and nursery contacts.
  • Kisan Call Centre: 1800-180-1551 for general farm scheme queries.

No agent can get an application approved for a fee. Assistance is released only after the mandap physically exists and has been inspected.

Frequently asked questions

How much subsidy does the trellis mandap scheme give?

A general farmer gets 50 per cent of the notified unit cost — about Rs 26,000 per hectare for a kaccha mandap on a Rs 52,000 unit cost, and about Rs 40,000 per hectare for a semi-pucca mandap on a Rs 80,000 unit cost. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe farmers get 75 per cent and Devipujak beneficiaries 90 per cent, within the same per-hectare ceilings.

Which crops qualify for mandap assistance in Gujarat?

Vine vegetables grown on an overhead structure qualify — bitter gourd (karela), bottle gourd (dudhi), ivy gourd (tindora), parwal, ridge gourd, sponge gourd and similar creepers. The mandap must actually be built and planted; a bare structure with no crop fails inspection.

How many hectares can one farmer claim?

Assistance is limited to 2.0 hectares per account under the notified component conditions, and a farmer can take the benefit a limited number of times in a lifetime (three times in the conditions published in recent iKhedut cycles).

Can I build the mandap first and claim the subsidy later?

No. Gujarat horticulture components run on prior approval — build only after the taluka or district horticulture office issues the pre-approval (purva manjuri) order, otherwise the claim is rejected at inspection.

What materials are allowed in the mandap?

Wooden or bamboo poles, GI wire and plastic wire are the accepted materials. The published norms for a kaccha or semi-pucca mandap ask for about 1,600 poles and 400 kg of 12 to 18 gauge GI wire per hectare at roughly 2.5 metre by 2.5 metre spacing.

Is the application on iKhedut free?

Yes, applying on ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in is free. A Village Computer Entrepreneur or cyber cafe may charge a small typing fee for assisted filing, but no fee is payable to any official for approval.

When does the mandap application window open?

Horticulture components open in announced windows on iKhedut rather than all year. Past cycles have run windows closing on 31 May and 31 October, so check the "Schemes" page on the portal before planning your planting.
