State Government Backward Class Scholarship (Class 6 to 10), Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
State Government Backward Class Scholarship pays Madhya Pradesh school students from Backward Class and minority families an annual amount of Rs 200 to Rs 400, paid by Direct Benefit Transfer, for Classes 6 to 10. Boys in Classes 6 to 8 get Rs 200 a year and girls in Classes 9 and 10 get Rs 400. Schools apply on the Shiksha Portal.
What is the State Government Backward Class Scholarship for Classes 6 to 10?
State Government Backward Class Scholarship is a small annual scholarship paid by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to school students from Backward Class and notified minority families studying in Classes 6 to 10. Policy for the scheme sits with the Department of Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, and delivery runs through the School Education Department's Shiksha Portal at shikshaportal.mp.gov.in, which is the state's integrated student lifecycle, enrolment and scholarship system.
The amounts are deliberately modest and are annual, not monthly:
| Class | Boys | Girls |
|---|---|---|
| Class 6 to 8 | Rs 200 per year | Rs 300 per year |
| Class 9 and 10 | Rs 300 per year | Rs 400 per year |
Nobody is put through school on Rs 400 a year, and the scheme is not designed to do that. What it does is keep a Backward Class or minority child on a live government benefit record from Class 6 onwards, with a Samagra ID, a completed e-KYC and a working bank link, so that the larger benefits. The post-matric scholarship after Class 10, hostel support, fee reimbursement, attach without friction later. Treating this as a records exercise rather than a cash scheme is the right way to read it.
Key features
- Classes 6 to 10 only, in schools mapped on the Shiksha Portal.
- Backward Class and minority students of Madhya Pradesh.
- Paid once a year by Direct Benefit Transfer.
- No student portal login. The school handles the entry.
- Eligibility test is non-taxpayer parents and land below 10 acres, not a rupee income ceiling.
Who is eligible for the Backward Class Scholarship for Classes 6 to 10?
A student qualifies when all of these hold:
- The student is a permanent resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- The student belongs to a Backward Class on the state list, or to a notified minority community.
- The student is studying in Class 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10.
- The parents or guardians are not income tax payers.
- The family does not own more than 10 acres of land.
- The student has a Samagra ID, is mapped to the school on the Shiksha Portal, and has completed Samagra e-KYC.
Who is not eligible and cannot apply:
- Students in Classes 1 to 5, who fall outside this scheme's class range.
- Students in Class 11 and above, they must move to the Post Matric Scholarship for Backward Class Students on hescholarship.mp.gov.in.
- SC and ST students, who are covered by separate scholarship schemes.
- Children whose parents pay income tax.
- Families owning more than 10 acres of land.
- Students in schools outside Madhya Pradesh or in schools not mapped on the Shiksha Portal.
- Students whose Samagra e-KYC is not complete โ the sanction cannot be generated at all without it.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Samagra ID | Yes | The identity key for the whole Shiksha Portal record |
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Required for Samagra e-KYC and bank linkage |
| Backward Class or minority certificate | Yes | Establishes category |
| MP domicile certificate | Yes | Permanent residence |
| Bank passbook copy | Yes | Linked through Samagra e-KYC for DBT |
| Non-taxpayer / land self-declaration | Yes | Parents not income tax payers, land under 10 acres |
| School enrolment record | Yes | Maintained by the school; replaces a bonafide certificate |
| Passport-size photograph | No | Kept in the school record |
Note what is not on this list: there is no separate application form to buy, no affidavit to get notarised, and no fee. If someone asks a family for money to "get the school scholarship started", that is not part of the process.
How to apply for the Class 6 to 10 Backward Class Scholarship
- Get the Samagra ID for the child if the family does not already have one, through samagra.gov.in or the local nagar panchayat, municipality or gram panchayat office.
- Complete Samagra e-KYC on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in: open the e-KYC option on the home page, enter the Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and verify the OTP. This is the step that links the student to a bank account for DBT, and it is the step that fails most often.
- Give the certificates to the school: Backward Class or minority certificate, domicile certificate, bank passbook copy and the non-taxpayer declaration. The class teacher or school head keeps the set on file.
- Let the school map the student on the Shiksha Portal against the Samagra ID for the current academic year, with the correct class, category and gender, since all four decide the amount and the eligibility.
- Check the status on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in using the Samagra ID once the school confirms the entry is done, and again a few weeks later to confirm the sanction and payment.
There is no separate student login and no online form a parent fills in independently. This is the single biggest difference from the post-matric scholarships, and parents who go looking for a student application portal for this scheme are looking for something that does not exist.
How is the money paid?
Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer into the bank account linked to the student through Samagra e-KYC, credited once for the academic year rather than monthly. Because the sums are small, banks occasionally hold them against minimum balance rules on ordinary savings accounts, a basic savings account is the safer arrangement for a school student.
The amount is fixed by class and gender, not by the family's income or the school's fees, which makes this scheme unusually simple to predict: a girl in Class 9 gets Rs 400 for the year, and no calculation or fee cap changes that.
How to check scholarship status with a Samagra ID
- Open shikshaportal.mp.gov.in.
- Choose the option to know scholarship status on the home page.
- Enter the student's Samagra ID and the academic year, then the captcha.
- Submit, and read the list of schemes sanctioned for that student along with the payment position for each.
The same portal publishes district-wise e-KYC statistics and school-wise enrolment and scholarship sanction status, which is useful if you want to check whether a whole school has been left out rather than one child.
Why sanctions fail, and how to fix them
- Samagra e-KYC incomplete. The commonest cause by a wide margin. Redo the e-KYC with an Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Student not mapped to the school for the current academic year on the Shiksha Portal. Only the school can fix this.
- Wrong class, category or gender in the record, which either blocks the sanction or produces the wrong amount.
- Bank account not linked or dormant, so the DBT bounces back.
- Category certificate not on file with the school.
- Duplicate Samagra ID for the same child, usually created after a school transfer.
Every one of these is fixed at the school first. Escalate only if the school cannot correct the record.
Where to get help
- Class teacher or school head. The first and usually the only stop, because the school owns the Shiksha Portal entry.
- Samagra helpline: 0755-2558395, for Samagra ID and e-KYC failures.
- Block Education Officer (BEO) or District Education Officer (DEO), where the school does not act.
- District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare office, for category and eligibility disputes.
- CM Helpline 181, the Madhya Pradesh government's general grievance line.
The scholarship is free to claim, and the school is required to do the portal work as part of its normal duties. No fee is payable to anyone at any stage.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the State Government Backward Class Scholarship for Class 6 to 10?
The scholarship pays Rs 200 a year for boys and Rs 300 a year for girls in Classes 6 to 8, and Rs 300 a year for boys and Rs 400 a year for girls in Classes 9 and 10. The amount is annual, not monthly, and is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer.
Who can get this scholarship?
Students of Classes 6 to 10 who are permanent residents of Madhya Pradesh and belong to a Backward Class or notified minority community can get it, provided their parents or guardians are not income tax payers and do not own more than 10 acres of land. The student must be enrolled in a school mapped on the Shiksha Portal.
Do students apply themselves or does the school apply?
The school does the work. Unlike the post-matric scholarships, there is no separate student login here - the class teacher or school head maps the student on the MP Shiksha Portal against the Samagra ID, and the sanction flows from that record. Families only need to complete Samagra e-KYC and supply the certificates.
Why is my child's scholarship showing as not sanctioned?
In almost every case the Samagra e-KYC is incomplete or the student is not correctly mapped to the school on the Shiksha Portal. Check the status using the Samagra ID on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in, then take the printout to the class teacher, because only the school can correct a mapping error.
Is there an income limit for this scholarship?
There is no rupee income ceiling published for this scheme. Instead the test is that the parents or guardians must not be income tax payers and must not own more than 10 acres of agricultural land, which is a different and generally wider test than the Rs 3 lakh limit used for the post-matric OBC scholarship.
Can a Class 11 or Class 12 student get this scholarship?
No. This scheme stops at Class 10. Backward Class students in Class 11 and above must apply instead under the Post Matric Scholarship for Backward Class Students on the MP Scholarship Portal 2.0 at hescholarship.mp.gov.in.
How do I check the scholarship status with a Samagra ID?
Open shikshaportal.mp.gov.in, choose the option to know scholarship status, enter the student's Samagra ID and the academic year, fill the captcha and submit. The screen shows the schemes sanctioned for that student and the payment position for each.
Whom do I contact if the Samagra e-KYC fails?
Call the Samagra helpline on 0755-2558395, which handles Samagra ID and e-KYC problems. The most common cause is a mobile number not linked to the student's or guardian's Aadhaar, which no school or portal can work around.
