Most rejections of the Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC, EBC and DNT Students happen for reasons that have nothing to do with a student's marks: a bank account that fails Aadhaar validation, a certificate in the wrong name, or a school that never verified the form. Bank account problems. The single largest cause

The scholarship is paid only by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into a bank account in the student's own name that is Aadhaar-seeded. Three separate failures cluster here:

1. Account not in the student's name. A parent's account is rejected in most states. Fix: open a minor's savings account in the student's name (a guardian-operated account is accepted in several states) and update it on the portal.
2. Account not Aadhaar-seeded for DBT. Having Aadhaar linked to the bank is not the same as the account being "seeded" in the NPCI DBT mapper. Fix: ask the branch to seed the account for DBT and confirm on the NPCI Aadhaar-mapper status page.
3. Name mismatch between Aadhaar, the passbook and the school register. Fix: make the spelling identical across all three before resubmitting.

A sanction can be issued and the transfer can still bounce at this last step, so treat the bank details as the most important field in the form.

Certificate and income errors

• Caste certificate in a parent's name rather than the student's. The OBC, EBC or DNT certificate must be issued in the student's own name by the competent authority notified in your state. Fix: apply for a fresh certificate in the student's name.
• Income certificate above Rs 2.5 lakh, or issued by an authority the state does not recognise. Fix: obtain a valid certificate showing family income within the ceiling from the notified revenue authority.
• Expired income certificate. Many states require it to be issued within the current financial year. Fix: get a current-year certificate before applying.

School verification not done in time

An application the school has not verified on the National Scholarship Portal is never forwarded to the state welfare department, so it lapses silently even though the student did everything right. Fix: after you submit, personally confirm with the school's institute nodal officer that they have verified the application on the portal before the institute-verification deadline. If the school is not registered on NSP, it must complete institute registration first.

Wrong portal or wrong class

• Applied on the wrong portal. Some states run their own social welfare or backward classes welfare portal for this scheme instead of NSP. A claim filed on the wrong system is never processed. Fix: check your state welfare department's notification and file where it directs.
• Student in Class 8 or below. The centrally funded scheme covers only Class 9 and Class 10. Fix: for lower classes, look for your state's own pre-matric scheme.
• Duplicate claim against another government scholarship for the same year triggers exclusion. Fix: withdraw the duplicate; a student may hold only one government scholarship per year.

How to correct a defective application

When an officer marks an application "defective" and returns it, the National Scholarship Portal opens a limited correction facility. According to NSP's own process notes, the fields that the institute or state can edit include category, annual income, Aadhaar number, day-scholar/hosteller status, IFSC code and account number. Steps:

1. Log in and open the application flagged as defective; read the reason shown.
2. Correct the flagged field or re-upload the corrected document.
3. Resubmit before the correction-window closing date, then have the school re-verify.

Do not start a fresh application. A duplicate from the same Aadhaar is itself a rejection reason.

Grievance route if the rejection is wrong

If you believe a rejection is mistaken, use the Grievance module on scholarships.gov.in: enter the application ID and the complaint, and track the tracked ticket on your dashboard (grievances are generally addressed within about 30 days, per the India.gov.in service listing). Quick checklist before you resubmit

• Bank account in the student's name, Aadhaar-seeded for DBT, name spelled identically everywhere.
• Valid current-year income certificate within Rs 2.5 lakh, from a notified authority.
• OBC/EBC/DNT certificate in the student's own name.
• Correct portal for your state, correct class (9 or 10), single scholarship only.
• School verification confirmed before the deadline.
