Private Tuition Assistance to Scheduled Caste Students Studying in Standard 11th and 12th (General Stream) is a merit scholarship run by the Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare, Social Justice and Empowerment Department, Government of Gujarat. The department's scheme code is BCK-8.

The problem the scheme addresses is narrow and real. Standard 11 and 12 are the two years that decide a Gujarat student's college admission, and coaching outside school has become effectively compulsory for a competitive board result. Coaching fees in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara routinely run into tens of thousands of rupees a year. Who is eligible for private tuition assistance?

You can apply if:

• You belong to a Scheduled Caste notified for Gujarat and hold a caste certificate from a competent authority.
• You scored 75 percent or more in Standard 10.
• You are currently studying in Standard 11 or Standard 12 in the general stream; arts or commerce.
• You are studying in a school in Gujarat.
• You rank within the first 100 selected students for the year.

You are not eligible and cannot apply if:

• You scored below 75 percent in Standard 10. There is no relaxation published for this bar.
• You are in the science stream. Use the department's separate science-stream tuition assistance scheme.
• You do not belong to a Scheduled Caste of Gujarat. Scheduled Tribe students should approach the Tribal Development Department, and OBC students the Director of Developing Castes Welfare, for their equivalent schemes.
• You are not enrolled in Standard 11 or 12, for example, a student repeating Standard 10, or a student who has already passed Standard 12.

How to apply for private tuition assistance in Gujarat

1. Collect the application form from the office of the Deputy Director, Scheduled Caste Welfare in your district, or download it from the directorate's website at sje.gujarat.gov.in/dscw. Forms are also available at the Director's headquarters in Gandhinagar.
2. Fill the form with your name exactly as it appears on the caste certificate, your school name, stream, Standard 10 percentage, and your bank account number with IFSC code.
3. Attach self-attested copies of the caste certificate, Standard 10 marksheet, school bonafide certificate, Aadhaar card and bank passbook, plus a photograph.
4. Get the school to countersign the form where the format asks for it. Most district offices will not process an unverified school section.
5. Submit the file at the Deputy Director's office and take a dated acknowledgement receipt.

Selection under BCK-8 is by a merit list rather than by rolling approval, so there is a defined point at which the year's 100 names are finalised. If you were qualified but not selected, that means the quota filled above your rank. You can apply again the following year if you are then in Standard 12 and still meet the conditions, but note that the Standard 12 amount is Rs 4,000, not Rs 8,000.
