How a North East grower gets expansion support
What the numbers show
The Coffee Board's expansion support helps tribal and small growers in the seven North Eastern states plant new coffee and fill gaps in existing plantations. In 2022-23, the Board supported 1,032.6 hectares of coffee expansion and consolidation in the region. It also helped build 169 drying yards, 169 water augmentation units and 32 group nurseries, according to its annual report for that year.
The trend over the years
Support has varied a lot from year to year. The Board reported 707.35 hectares in 2018-19 and 577.60 hectares in 2020-21. In 2021-22 the figure dropped to 79.80 hectares, then rose to 1,032.6 hectares in 2022-23, the highest of the years shown. Drying yards followed a similar path, from 33 in 2020-21 and 20 in 2021-22 to 169 in 2022-23.
How the North East compares
In the Non-Traditional Areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, where the Board also works mainly with tribal growers, it supported 2,760.0 hectares of coffee expansion and 2,286 cement drying yards in 2022-23. In the North East, expansion is also meant to help farmers move away from shifting cultivation on jhum land.
What the figures do not tell you
The annual reports give one combined figure for expansion and consolidation, so the area under new planting alone is not shown. They also do not break the numbers down by state or count how many growers benefited. The 2018-19 report gives drying yards and water harvesting structures as one number.
Where to check the numbers
Coffee Board annual reports are published on coffeeboard.gov.in under the RTI section. The Board's extension offices in Guwahati and other North Eastern centres handle applications and can confirm current subsidy rates.
