How a woman gets trained under Mahila Coir Yojana
What the numbers show
Mahila Coir Yojana, running since 1994, is the women's training part of the Skill Upgradation component of Coir Vikas Yojana. Rural women get two months of paid training in spinning coir yarn on motorised ratts. In 2025-26, up to 31 December 2025, the Coir Board trained 635 women under MCY and 1,478 artisans in all its skill programmes.
The trend over the years
A Lok Sabha answer of 12 December 2024 gives the national totals. The Board trained 2,331 women in 2021-22, then only 1,301 in 2022-23, before numbers rose again to 1,963 in 2023-24. Up to 30 November 2024, 778 women had been trained in 2024-25. Numbers depend on how many batches the Board's regional offices run each year, so they move up and down rather than in a straight line.
State differences
Training follows the coconut belt. Kerala trained the most women in 2023-24 (410), followed by Tamil Nadu (338) and Assam (216), which is the main MCY state in the North East. Maharashtra and Odisha trained 200 each. Smaller states and islands such as Lakshadweep, Goa and Andaman and Nicobar run one or two batches a year. Lakshadweep had no trainees in the first two years of the table and 60 in 2023-24.
Other skill programmes
The same component pays for training in value added coir products, which reached 792 artisans in 2025-26 up to December, and for 24 entrepreneurship development programmes, 28 awareness programmes, six seminars and four exposure tours. PIB says more than 68,000 people have been trained in all Coir Board programmes since 2014-15.
What the figures do not tell you
The tables count women trained, not how many went on to spin yarn for a living or received a motorised ratt. The 2024-25 and 2025-26 figures are part year counts and should not be compared directly with full years.
Where to check the numbers
The MSME Annual Report on msme.gov.in lists the year's training figures, and Parliament answers on sansad.in give state-wise data when asked.
