Elderline - National Helpline for Senior Citizens: Why Calls Stall and How to Fix It
This is a supporting guide for Elderline - National Helpline for Senior Citizens (14567). See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.
Elderline - National Helpline for Senior Citizens: Why Calls Stall and How to Fix It
Elderline has no application to reject, it is a phone service, not a form. Elderline - National Helpline for Senior Citizens, reachable on the toll-free number 14567, needs no registration, no document and no fee. So the honest version of "why applications get rejected" is different here: the real problems are calls that go unanswered, requests Elderline cannot fulfil, and cases that stall after they are logged. This article covers those and their fixes.
Note on scope: Because there is no application and no rejection code, this troubleshooting guide is intentionally short and reframed around the genuine failure points of a helpline. Do not expect status codes or rejection letters, they do not exist for Elderline.
Problem 1: Nobody answers the call
Elderline operates 8 AM to 8 PM, all seven days, according to the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment's senior citizens portal. Calls outside these hours are not answered by a counsellor.
Fix: Call between 8 AM and 8 PM. If it is a genuine emergency outside those hours, use the emergency numbers below instead of waiting for Elderline to open.
Problem 2: You expected money and got information
Elderline pays no cash and transfers no pension. A caller looking for a grant, a pension transfer or a loan cannot obtain it through 14567. This is not a failure of the service. It is outside its design.
Fix: Use Elderline to be guided to the right scheme. For a cash pension, ask to be referred to the old age pension under the National Social Assistance Programme or a contributory pension like Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan. For free aids and appliances, ask about Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana.
Problem 3: It is an emergency and Elderline cannot dispatch help
Elderline is not an emergency service. It cannot send an ambulance or a police vehicle.
Fix: For a medical emergency call 108 or 102; for a crime in progress call 112. Use Elderline afterwards for follow-up support, counselling and referral.
Problem 4: The concern is not about a senior citizen
Elderline is meant for senior citizens aged 60 and above and people calling on their behalf. A caller with a concern unrelated to an elderly person is redirected elsewhere.
Fix: This is correct routing, not a rejection. Approach the service appropriate to your concern; ask the counsellor which one.
Problem 5: A field-intervention case is not acted on
Elderline can escalate to field intervention. A team that physically reaches a senior citizen in cases of abuse, harassment or abandonment. Sometimes the visit does not happen promptly.
Fix — the correct escalation path:
- When you first call, note the reference or case number the counsellor gives you. Use it on every follow-up.
- Stay reachable on the number you called from. The district field team or local social welfare officer contacts you before visiting.
- If there is no response, call back on 14567 with the reference number and ask for the case to be escalated to the state nodal officer.
- For a stalled field case, approach the District Social Welfare Officer directly, the senior citizens portal at scw.dosje.gov.in lists state nodal officer contacts.
Problem 6: Someone asks you to pay to "register" with Elderline
There is no registration and no fee. Anyone demanding money to enrol a senior citizen on Elderline is running a scam.
Fix: Report the demand on 14567 itself. No one may charge a senior citizen for calling Elderline.
Quick reference
| Situation | Right number |
|---|---|
| Senior citizen support, guidance, abuse, loneliness | 14567 (8 AM–8 PM) |
| Medical emergency | 108 / 102 |
| Crime in progress | 112 |
| Stalled field case | 14567 + District Social Welfare Officer |
The single most useful habit is to keep the case reference number and quote it on every follow-up call, that is what turns a one-off complaint into a tracked case.
