What the numbers show

Building Grants including Studio Theatres is one of the smallest parts of the Ministry of Culture's grant schemes. A Lok Sabha answer of 9 February 2026 shows 23 organisations funded with Rs 150.09 lakh in 2024-25. In 2025-26, only 5 organisations had received Rs 27.25 lakh by 4 February 2026.

The trend over the years

Funding fell for four years in a row: Rs 193.46 lakh for 29 organisations in 2020-21, Rs 133.05 lakh in 2021-22, Rs 119.47 lakh in 2022-23 and Rs 108.43 lakh for 15 organisations in 2023-24. It rose in 2024-25 to Rs 150.09 lakh for 23 organisations. From 2023-24 the grants are paid through the Central Nodal Agency module, so later figures are amounts authorised to grantees.

State differences

Only ten states and UTs received a building grant in 2024-25. Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh each got between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh. Several states with large theatre traditions, such as Karnataka and Kerala, received nothing that year, although Karnataka had grants in earlier years.

What the figures do not tell you

Building grants are usually paid in instalments over more than one year, so a year's figure mixes new projects and later instalments of older ones. The answer does not say how many auditoriums or studio theatres were finished. The 2025-26 figures are for part of the year only.

Where to check

These figures come from the Ministry of Culture's answers to Parliament questions. Scheme guidelines and the application window are on the ministry's grants portal.
