How a Repertory Grant is sanctioned
What the numbers show
The Repertory Grant is the largest part of the Ministry of Culture's support to performing arts groups. A Lok Sabha answer of 9 February 2026 shows that 1,041 organisations received Rs 7,704.7 lakh in 2024-25. In 2025-26, 1,240 organisations had been authorised Rs 8,834.05 lakh by 4 February 2026, so that year was already ahead of the full previous year.
The trend over the years
Funding grew fast after the pandemic years. The scheme supported 529 organisations with Rs 3,480.1 lakh in 2020-21 and 573 with Rs 4,248.5 lakh in 2021-22. The count more than doubled to 1,214 in 2022-23 and peaked at 1,882 organisations and Rs 10,147.6 lakh in 2023-24. It dropped in 2024-25 and rose again in 2025-26.
From 2023-24 the Ministry pays these grants through the Central Nodal Agency module of the Department of Expenditure, so the later figures are amounts authorised to grantees rather than lump sums released.
State differences
West Bengal leads by a wide margin, with 208 organisations and Rs 1,432.2 lakh in 2024-25. Delhi, Manipur, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh follow. Manipur stands out for a small state: 119 organisations, more than Delhi. Some states and UTs, such as Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, received nothing in 2024-25.
What the figures do not tell you
The table counts organisations, not the number of gurus and disciples they support. It also does not show how many applications were rejected, or how much each organisation received. The 2025-26 figures are for part of the year only.
Where to check
Year-wise and state-wise figures come from Parliament answers of the Ministry of Culture. The application window is advertised each year on the National School of Drama and Ministry of Culture websites.
Frequently asked questions
How many organisations get the Repertory Grant?
1,041 organisations were funded in 2024-25 and 1,240 in 2025-26 up to 4 February 2026, according to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1594 answered on 9 February 2026. The highest count in recent years was 1,882 in 2023-24.
How much money is given under the Repertory Grant each year?
Rs 7,704.7 lakh was authorised in 2024-25 and Rs 10,147.6 lakh in 2023-24. In 2025-26, Rs 8,834.05 lakh had been authorised up to 4 February 2026.
Which state gets the most Repertory Grant money?
West Bengal, with Rs 1,432.2 lakh to 208 organisations in 2024-25. Delhi (Rs 823.77 lakh) and Manipur (Rs 816.68 lakh) came next.
Why did the number of organisations fall in 2024-25?
The Lok Sabha answer gives the figures but not the reasons. From 2023-24, grants are paid through the Central Nodal Agency module, and the figures from that year are amounts authorised to grantees.
Does the grant go to individual artists?
No. The figures count organisations. The grant is paid to registered cultural organisations, which then pay the guru and disciples.
