How a Group Workshed project is funded
What the numbers show
The Group Workshed Scheme helps small powerloom weavers who come together in a group to build a shared workshed and install modern looms. It ran as part of PowerTex India, the Textiles Ministry's package for the powerloom sector.
In a Lok Sabha reply on 12 February 2021, the Ministry said 115 projects covering 710 units were sanctioned in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20, and the Centre released Rs 55.14 crore over those years. That figure includes instalments paid for projects sanctioned earlier.
Year by year
Releases were Rs 21.53 crore in 2017-18, dropped to Rs 7.64 crore in 2018-19 and rose to Rs 25.97 crore in 2019-20. Because subsidy is paid in instalments as construction moves forward, the yearly figure depends on how many sheds reached each stage, not only on new approvals.
State differences
Gujarat dominates the scheme, with 99 projects and 633 units. Maharashtra followed with 14 projects and 67 units. Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu had one project each, and no other state appears in the Ministry's table for these three years.
Current status
PowerTex India ran from April 2017 to March 2020 and was extended to March 2021. A Rajya Sabha reply published by PIB on 6 February 2026 says the scheme has been folded into the Textile Cluster Development Scheme, with support only for completing ongoing projects. So no fresh year-wise figures have been published since 2019-20.
What the figures do not tell you
The Ministry has not published how many looms were installed under these 115 projects, how many weavers work in them, or how many sheds were finished. The units column counts powerloom units, not individual looms.
Where to check for updates
The Office of the Textile Commissioner at txcindia.gov.in handles the scheme. Any later figures would appear in Parliament answers published by PIB.
