What is the EPFO Internship Scheme?

The Internship Scheme of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) invites applications from students to be engaged as "Interns" with EPFO, the national retirement-fund body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. According to the scheme, interns get an opportunity to understand EPFO's functioning and departmental policy issues, and to contribute to policy and legislation by generating inputs such as empirical analysis, briefing reports and policy papers.

EPFO administers provident fund, pension and insurance schemes for organised- sector workers under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, and is one of the world's largest social-security organisations by membership. Interns are therefore attached to work that touches labour and social-security policy and legislation rather than routine office tasks, and are placed with an officer in a Division, Department or Wing chosen by the Central Provident Fund Commissioner according to their suitability.

The scheme is explicit that the internship is neither a job nor any assurance of a job in EPFO. It is a short, policy-focused placement intended to be mutually beneficial for the intern and the organisation, and interns are expected to deliver a report or paper that feeds into EPFO's policy work.

Key features

  • Stipend of Rs 8,000 per month.
  • Duration of 2 to 6 months.
  • A maximum of 10 interns engaged at a time, with the Central Provident Fund Commissioner's approval.
  • Application by email in the prescribed format.

Who is eligible for the EPFO internship?

You can apply if you meet any one of these, and are enrolled in a recognised university or institution in India or abroad:

  • You are pursuing law in the last two years of the degree course, or are a law graduate.
  • You are pursuing post-graduation in law or are a research scholar in law.
  • You are pursuing a post-graduate course such as MBA, MSW, MSc, MA, MCom or MCA.

You cannot apply if:

  • You do not fall into any of the eligible categories above, for example, an undergraduate in a non-law stream who is not yet a graduate.
  • You are not enrolled in a recognised university or institution.

Because only 10 interns are engaged at a time, selection is competitive and based on the applicant's suitability and the requirement of the relevant wing or division. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee selection.

What documents are required?

At the time of selection: proof of identity (passport, Aadhaar, Voter Card; OCI card and national ID for OCI holders), a Curriculum Vitae, and self-attested certificates, mark sheets and transcripts for every qualification and course claimed. Originals are verified at selection.
