How LHDCP support reaches livestock farmers
What the numbers show
Central releases under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) have risen in each of the last three years. According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying's reply to Lok Sabha unstarred question 2579 of 4 August 2026, the Centre released Rs 64,262.50 lakh in 2023-24, Rs 89,005.14 lakh in 2024-25 and Rs 1,03,215.71 lakh in 2025-26. The increase followed the Cabinet's revision of the scheme in March 2025, which set an outlay of Rs 3,880 crore for 2024-25 and 2025-26 and added the Pashu Aushadhi component for cheap generic veterinary medicines.
State differences
Uttar Pradesh received the most money in all three years: Rs 15,534.67 lakh in 2025-26. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar make up the rest of the top five for 2025-26. Some states moved sharply. Rajasthan went from Rs 635.11 lakh in 2023-24 to Rs 8,363.26 lakh in 2025-26, and Jharkhand from nothing in 2023-24 to Rs 3,021.99 lakh. Releases depend on when a State sends proposals and how much of its earlier money it has used, so a jump or a fall in one year does not always mean a change in need.
Vaccination and mobile units
The same answer reports the progress of each disease control component over the last five years. Foot and Mouth Disease vaccination is by far the largest, at 10,801.76 lakh doses. Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD) accounts for 1,850.57 lakh doses and the Peste des Petits Ruminants programme for goats and sheep 1,561.82 lakh doses. 4,019 mobile veterinary units were operational, offering treatment, vaccination and minor surgery at the farmer's door.
What the figures do not tell you
Dose counts are not the number of animals. Vaccination rounds are repeated, so the same animal can appear more than once. Release figures show money sent by the Centre, not money spent by the State in that year. The answer also does not give the number of farmers served by the mobile units.
Where to check for updates
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying publishes scheme guidelines on dahd.gov.in. Fresh state-wise figures usually appear in answers to Parliament questions during each session, which are posted on sansad.in.
