How rural wage work is provided
What the numbers show
MGNREGA was India's rural employment guarantee for two decades. In its last full year on record, 2024-25, it generated 290.60 crore person-days of work, and women did 58.15% of that work, up from 48% in 2013-14, according to the PIB explainer of 26 August 2025. The Ministry of Rural Development says 2,923 crore person-days were generated between 2014-15 and 2024-25, against 1,660 crore from 2006-07 to 2013-14.
The trend over the years
Work peaked at 389.09 crore person-days in 2020-21, when migrant workers returned to villages during Covid, and the budget was raised that year from Rs 61,500 crore to Rs 1,11,500 crore. Demand then eased to 293.70 crore in 2022-23, rose to 309.01 crore in 2023-24 partly because of drought in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and settled at 290.60 crore in 2024-25. The year-end reviews show 2025-26 running behind: 161.6 crore person-days by 2 December 2025, against 196.30 crore by 11 December 2024.
What the figures do not tell you
A person-day total says nothing about how evenly the work was spread. The average household got about 50 days of work, not 100, and the Economic Survey 2025-26 noted that only a small share of households completed the full 100 days after the pandemic. Registered households are not the same as households that worked: the 15.99 crore figure counts households registered under the scheme, not households given work that year. The figures above are also national totals; state-wise splits are in Parliament replies and the MIS.
The switch to VB-G RAM G
From 1 July 2026, the VB-G RAM G Act replaced MGNREGA. It raises the guarantee to 125 days per rural household, keeps wage payment within 15 days, and moves funding to a 60:40 Centre-state share. Figures for the new scheme will be reported separately, so the series above ends with MGNREGA.
Where to check the live numbers
Year-wise and state-wise MGNREGA reports, including person-days, households and expenditure, are on the NREGASoft MIS (nrega.nic.in and nrega.dord.gov.in). PIB carries the Ministry of Rural Development's replies to Parliament, which usually include state tables.
