How a Mahila Samriddhi loan reaches a woman
What the numbers show
Mahila Samriddhi Yojana is the micro-finance scheme of the National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation for women from backward classes. According to the NBCFDC Annual Report 2021-22, the scheme disbursed Rs 121.71 crore to 57,975 women in 2021-22. That made it a large part of NBCFDC's work: 36.30 per cent of all its beneficiaries and 25.82 per cent of its total loan disbursement of Rs 471.37 crore that year.
The trend
The 2020-21 annual report gives Rs 120.33 crore for 40,210 women. So the money lent was almost unchanged between the two years, while the number of women reached rose. The reports do not give an average loan size.
State differences
The scheme is heavily concentrated. Annexure 4.4 of the 2021-22 report shows Tamil Nadu drew Rs 8,000 lakh for 38,700 women and Kerala Rs 3,425 lakh for 15,935 women. The other eight states that drew funds, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi, received between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 200 lakh each. Large states such as Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal do not appear in the table at all.
The pattern reflects how NBCFDC works. It lends through State Channelising Agencies, so a state's share depends on whether its agency applies for and uses micro-finance funds, not only on the number of eligible women.
What the figures do not tell you
The figures show loans released through channel partners, not how many women repaid or how their businesses did. They cover NBCFDC only. Other national finance corporations report their own women's loan schemes separately.
