How an NBHM project gets funded
What the numbers show
The National Beekeeping and Honey Mission is a central sector scheme run by the National Bee Board. Its main public measure is the number of projects sanctioned. A Rajya Sabha reply of 21 March 2025 put this at 298 projects from 2020-21 to 2024-25, spread over the states, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and a group of national and central level agencies.
The trend over the years
Project sanctions stayed between 41 and 59 a year for the first four years. They then jumped to 102 in 2024-25, the highest of the five years. West Bengal (11), Rajasthan (10), Uttar Pradesh (10) and Maharashtra (9) had the most sanctions in 2024-25.
State differences
Uttar Pradesh leads with 30 projects, followed by Uttarakhand (23), Karnataka (20), Jammu and Kashmir (18) and Assam (17). Many smaller states have only one to three projects, and Mizoram had none in the period. Fourteen projects were given to national or central level agencies rather than to any one state.
Labs, FPOs and the Madhukranti portal
The PIB backgrounder of November 2025 lists what had been sanctioned till March 2025: 6 world class honey testing labs, 47 mini honey testing labs, 6 disease diagnostic labs, 26 honey processing units and 18 collection, branding and marketing units, among others. Out of 100 beekeeper FPOs allotted to the National Bee Board, 97 had been registered or formed by March 2025. About 14,859 beekeepers had registered on the Madhukranti traceability portal by 14 October 2025.
What the figures do not tell you
A project can be a single beekeeper unit or a large lab, so the count of projects says nothing about money spent. The ministry has said it does not keep producer-wise data. The state table also stops at March 2025, and the mission's current phase runs only to 2025-26.
Where to check for updates
The National Bee Board website and the Madhukranti portal carry scheme news. Fresh state-wise figures usually appear in replies to questions in Parliament, which are published on sansad.in.
