National Food Security Mission: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It

Applications for assistance under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) are turned down for a short list of structural reasons: most of them about where you farm, how much area you claim, and whether your land and bank records verify, rather than anything wrong with your crop. Why NFSM applications get rejected

1. District not covered under NFSM for your crop

NFSM works crop by crop and district by district in identified districts, not everywhere. If your district is not selected under NFSM for the crop you grow this year, an otherwise eligible farmer is turned away. This is the most common rejection. Fix: confirm at your block or district agriculture office whether your district is covered for your crop this season before applying, and ask which components (seed, demonstration, machinery, plant protection, micronutrients) are sanctioned.

2. Area claimed above the 2-hectare seed subsidy ceiling

NFSM seed subsidy is capped at 2 hectares per farmer. Area beyond that is not eligible, and claims over the cap are trimmed or rejected. Fix: claim seed subsidy only up to 2 hectares. For larger holdings, plan the balance under other components or seasons.

3. Land record does not match the applicant

If the khasra/khatauni (or state equivalent) does not match your name or the area declared, the claim fails verification. Fix: submit land records in your own name matching the declared area; get mutation or correction done first if the record is outdated.

4. Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded

Subsidy is released by Direct Benefit Transfer. A non-Aadhaar-seeded account makes the DBT transfer fail. Fix: get your bank account Aadhaar-seeded at the branch before you apply.

5. District target exhausted for the component

NFSM assistance is limited by the physical and financial targets sanctioned to each district. Once the year's target for a component is used up, eligibility does not guarantee sanction. Fix: apply early in the season, and ask the block office to note your name for the next allocation if the current target is exhausted.

6. Purchase bill missing (reimbursement components)

Where a component works on reimbursement after purchase, a missing purchase bill or receipt causes rejection. Fix: keep the original bill/receipt for seed, machinery or inputs and submit it with the claim.

7. Applicant is a dealer or trader

NFSM assistance goes to cultivating farmers and implementing institutions, not to seed dealers, input dealers or traders seeking subsidy as a business. Fix: only cultivating farmers should apply for the input/seed benefit.

How to fix a rejected NFSM claim (grievance route)

1. Ask for the exact reason at the block agriculture office, do not act on a guess.
2. Correct at source: update land records, seed the bank account with Aadhaar, or produce the missing bill, as the reason requires.
3. Escalate to the District Agriculture Officer for issues the block office cannot resolve, and to ask for the current year's rate list so your claim matches the sanctioned rate rather than the shop price.
4. Use the Kisan Call Centre on 1800-180-1551 (6 am to 10 pm, 22 languages) for general guidance and to be pointed to the right office.
5. Note the scheme name may differ: after the October 2024 rationalisation, NFSM sits under Krishonnati Yojana and was renamed the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission — your sanction letter may cite either, which is not itself a rejection.
