What the numbers show

National Savings Certificates (VIII Issue) remain one of the larger small savings schemes sold through post offices. According to the National Savings Institute (NSI), savers deposited Rs 58,990.07 crore in NSC during 2025-26. Payments on certificates that matured or were closed came to Rs 32,667.50 crore, leaving a net collection of Rs 26,322.57 crore for the year.

In the first five months of 2026-27, from April to August 2026, NSC deposits stood at Rs 31,569.20 crore and the net collection at Rs 17,795.97 crore.

The trend over five years

The NSI statements for March of each year give the full-year totals. NSC deposits were Rs 40,368.33 crore in 2021-22 and Rs 42,655.48 crore in 2022-23. They rose to Rs 56,306.82 crore in 2023-24 and Rs 66,251.56 crore in 2024-25, before easing to Rs 58,990.07 crore in 2025-26.

Net collection has moved up and down more sharply than deposits, because it depends on how many older certificates mature in a given year. It was Rs 19,695.44 crore in 2021-22, Rs 10,792.64 crore in 2022-23 and Rs 16,860.75 crore in 2023-24. In 2024-25 it was Rs 10,923.63 crore, and in 2025-26 it reached Rs 26,322.57 crore, the highest in this five-year series.

Post office or bank

Almost all NSC business goes through the Department of Posts. In 2025-26, post offices took in Rs 58,845.95 crore of NSC deposits, while banks collected Rs 144.12 crore.

What the figures do not tell you

These are money flows, not the number of investors or certificates. The statements do not show how many people bought NSC or the average size of an investment. The 2024-25 March statement is marked provisional, so final figures for that year may differ slightly.

Where to check the numbers

The NSI publishes a scheme-wise collection statement every month on nsiindia.gov.in, under Data and Statistics. Each statement gives deposits, payments and net collection for the month and the year to date, for every small savings scheme.
