How to Apply for National Social Assistance Programme: Step-by-Step Guide

This is a supporting guide for National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.

How to Apply for National Social Assistance Programme: Step-by-Step Guide

Apply for the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) at your Gram Panchayat office in a village or the municipal ward office in a town, using the form for the specific component you qualify for. There is no fee and no online-only route: NSAP is run by the Ministry of Rural Development but delivered by state governments, so the exact counter and portal depend on your state. This guide walks the process field by field; the parent NSAP scheme guide covers eligibility and pension amounts.

Step 1 to Pick the correct component before you fill anything

NSAP is not one form. It has five components, each with its own application and its own supporting documents: old-age pension (IGNOAPS), widow pension (IGNWPS), disability pension (IGNDPS), the National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) and Annapurna. Applying under the wrong component is the most common avoidable mistake, because the verifying officer cannot re-classify your form, it comes back and you start again. Decide first: are you claiming a monthly pension for yourself, or the one-time Rs 20,000 family benefit after a breadwinner's death? That single choice routes the rest.

Step 2 to Collect the form

Collect the printed form from the Gram Panchayat in rural areas or the municipal ward office / urban local body in towns and cities. Several states also publish the NSAP form and accept submissions on their own social security or e-district portal; West Bengal, Rajasthan, Kerala and others run such portals. If your state has one, you can fill the same fields online and upload scans instead of visiting the counter first. There is no charge for the form in either mode.

Step 3 to Fill the form field by field

Enter the following exactly as they appear on your documents:

  1. Applicant name: spelled identically to your Aadhaar and bank passbook. A mismatch here is the top cause of a failed payment later.
  2. Age / date of birth, this decides both eligibility and the rate (for old-age pension, the central share rises from age 80).
  3. Category and component, tick the single component you chose in Step 1.
  4. Address — with village/ward, block and district, so the record maps to the correct sanctioning office.
  5. Bank or post office account details; account number, IFSC and branch, in the beneficiary's own name.
  6. Aadhaar number, used to seed the account for direct benefit transfer.

Step 4 to Attach the supporting documents

Attach self-attested copies: Aadhaar, age proof, BPL certificate or ration card, and a bank/post-office passbook copy. Add the death certificate of the spouse for a widow pension, a disability certificate certifying severe or multiple disability for the disability pension, or the death certificate of the breadwinner (aged 18–59) for NFBS. Keep the BPL proof handy: households not on the state's below-poverty-line list are not eligible for any component, and no document waives that.

Step 5 to Submit and take an acknowledgement

Submit at the Gram Panchayat, Block Development Office or municipal office and insist on a dated acknowledgement or receipt number. This is your only proof of the filing date, which matters for NFBS because states set a time limit for claiming the family benefit after the death.

Step 6 to Attend verification

Your application is verified by the Gram Panchayat or the concerned officer. In rural areas the Gram Sabha often approves the beneficiary list in an open meeting, so your presence and your documents may be reviewed there.

Step 7 to Sanction and first payment

Once sanctioned, your name enters the NSAP database and the pension is credited electronically to your account, usually monthly. For NFBS, the Rs 20,000 central share is paid in a single transfer after the claim is verified.

After you apply

Track your record with your beneficiary or sanction number at the Block Development Office, or on your state's social security portal where one exists. For technical problems with the NSAP system, the Ministry of Rural Development publishes the NSAP-PPS helpline 1800-111-555. No agent or middleman can charge a fee to add your name to the NSAP list.
