National Social Assistance Programme: How to Check Application and Pension Status
This is a supporting guide for National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.
How to check your NSAP status, fast
To check a National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) pension, you have four routes: your Gram Panchayat or Block Development Office register, your state's social-security or e-district portal, the public reports on nsap.nic.in, and the credit entry in your own bank or post office passbook. There is no single national beneficiary login that shows one person's live status, NSAP is state-implemented, so the register and the passbook remain the most reliable checks. The National Social Assistance Programme pillar covers eligibility and pension rates; this article is only about tracking where your application or payment stands.
Route 1: Gram Panchayat or Block Development Office register
The sanction register and beneficiary list are maintained at the Gram Panchayat in rural areas and the Block Development Office (BDO) at block level. This is where a new application is verified, approved by the Gram Sabha in many states, and entered into the NSAP database.
- Carry your acknowledgement slip (the dated receipt from when you applied), your Aadhaar and your bank passbook.
- Ask the panchayat secretary or BDO clerk to check your name and sanction number in the register.
- If sanctioned, the register shows the component (IGNOAPS, IGNWPS, IGNDPS, NFBS or Annapurna) and the date from which the pension runs.
Route 2: Your state's social-security or e-district portal
Many states publish the NSAP beneficiary list online. Where a portal exists, you can usually search by district, block and panchayat to find your name without visiting the office.
- Open your state's social-security, social-welfare or e-district portal.
- Navigate to the pension or NSAP beneficiary search.
- Filter down to your panchayat or ward and look for your name and sanction status.
Because each state runs its own portal, the exact menu labels differ, if you cannot find the search, the panchayat office can point you to the correct page for your state.
Route 3: Reports on nsap.nic.in
The national NSAP portal at nsap.nic.in, run by the Ministry of Rural Development, publishes programme reports and dashboards. These are useful to confirm sanction and payment data at the district or panchayat level. Treat the national portal as a verification layer over your state's records rather than a personal status login, since the operational register lives with the state.
Route 4: Your bank or post office passbook
The simplest payment check is your own passbook. NSAP pensions are paid by direct benefit transfer into an account in the beneficiary's own name, so a monthly (in some states quarterly) credit entry confirms the pension is live. For NFBS, the Rs 20,000 central lump sum appears as a single transfer after the claim is verified. No credit for a full cycle is the signal to investigate.
What each status effectively means
- Name in the sanction register, credits in the passbook, pension is active; nothing to do.
- Application submitted, not yet in the register: still under verification at the panchayat or BDO; wait for the Gram Sabha or officer approval.
- In the register but no credit — a payment failure, usually a bank account not seeded with Aadhaar, a name mismatch, a dormant or closed account, or a pending annual life certificate.
- Not found anywhere, the application may not have been captured; re-check with the acknowledgement slip.
If the status is stuck: what to do next
- For a payment failure, take your passbook and Aadhaar to the Block Development Office to correct bank, Aadhaar or name details, and complete any pending life certificate or annual verification, which suspends the pension until submitted.
- For an eligibility dispute, for example, a name removed during the state's periodic re-verification: approach the District Social Welfare Officer or the District Collector's grievance cell.
- For technical problems with the NSAP system, the Ministry of Rural Development publishes the NSAP-PPS technical helpline 1800-111-555.
No agent or middleman can charge a fee to add your name to the NSAP beneficiary list or to "release" a pension, every check above is free, whether at the panchayat, the BDO or on the portal.
