What the numbers show

The National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) offers free testing, free treatment and cash support to every TB patient. According to the India TB Report 2024 of the Central TB Division, India notified 25.52 lakh TB patients in 2023: 17.08 lakh through the public sector and 8.44 lakh through the private sector. That was 92.4 per cent of the target of 27.62 lakh.

The trend over the years

The report's in-country model estimates that TB incidence fell from 237 per lakh people in 2015 to 195 in 2023. The decline was steady until 2020 (197), rose slightly in 2021 (200) and fell again by 2023. Estimated TB deaths followed a similar path, from 28 per lakh in 2015 to 22 in 2023, with a rise to 25 in 2021.

Cash support to patients

NTEP pays patients and helpers through direct benefit transfer. From April 2018 to December 2023, Rs 2,781 crore was paid to 1,00,37,873 beneficiaries under Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana. In 2023 alone, Rs 440 crore reached 18,75,510 patients. Smaller schemes paid patients in tribal and hilly areas, treatment supporters and private providers who notify cases. In October 2024 the Health Ministry raised the Ni-kshay Poshan amount from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 a month.

What the figures do not tell you

Incidence and deaths are model estimates with a range; the report also gives low and high values, and the middle value is shown here. Notification counts show cases found, not all cases in the population. The payment figures predate the October 2024 increase in the monthly amount.

Where to check the numbers

The Central TB Division publishes the India TB Report and quarterly reports on tbcindia.mohfw.gov.in, and live notification reports on the Ni-kshay reports portal.
