How an NBCFDC General Loan reaches a borrower
What the numbers show
The General Loan is NBCFDC's main term loan for Backward Class borrowers who want to start or expand a small business, farm activity, trade or service. In 2023-24 the corporation's annual report shows Rs 26,879.17 lakh disbursed to 17,424 borrowers under this scheme. Across all its schemes, NBCFDC lent Rs 525.09 crore to 68,372 beneficiaries that year.
The trend over the years
NBCFDC's total lending has held steady at a little over Rs 500 crore a year: Rs 51,184.60 lakh in 2022-23, Rs 52,508.89 lakh in 2023-24 and Rs 52,753.78 lakh in 2024-25. The number of beneficiaries fell from 1,40,343 to 60,520 over the same period, while the annual reports show the average loan per beneficiary rising. In 2025-26 the corporation reported its highest disbursement so far, Rs 613.75 crore to 61,621 beneficiaries.
State differences
Uttar Pradesh led General Loan disbursement in 2023-24 with Rs 7,236.99 lakh, followed by Kerala and Karnataka. Karnataka had almost as many borrowers as Uttar Pradesh (3,344 against 3,960) with less than half the money, so loans there were smaller on average. Several large states, including Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, drew very little, because lending depends on how actively each state channelising agency takes up NBCFDC funds.
What the figures do not tell you
From 2024-25 NBCFDC reports its lending under new heads, an Individual Loan Scheme and a Group Loan Scheme, instead of the older General Loan heading. Its 2024-25 report shows Rs 241.78 crore disbursed under individual loans above Rs 1.25 lakh and up to Rs 15 lakh, which is the closest match to the old General Loan, so year-on-year comparisons should be made with care. The figures also show money disbursed, not loans repaid or businesses still running.
