How the scholarship was paid
What the numbers show
The Post Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child paid a scholarship to girls who are the only child of their parents and who joined a regular, non-professional master's course. According to the UGC Annual Report 2023-24, UGC disbursed Rs 25.92 crore to 7,152 beneficiaries in 2023-24. The same report says the scheme has been merged into the new National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies, so only old cases are now being settled.
The trend over the years
The table brings together the figure from each year's UGC annual report. Spending was Rs 8.46 crore in 2014-15 and between Rs 10.82 crore and Rs 14.80 crore in the years from 2015-16 to 2022-23 that we checked. It then jumped to Rs 25.92 crore in 2023-24, the year the scheme was merged into NSPGS. The reports do not explain the jump.
Beneficiary counts move more than spending does. UGC paid 4,617 scholarship holders in 2015-16, 3,709 in 2020-21 and only 1,350 in 2021-22, before rising to 3,839 in 2022-23 and 7,152 in 2023-24. In the earlier years UGC also reported how many girls were selected for each two-year session: 3,192 for 2014-16, 3,975 for 2015-17 and 3,954 for 2016-18.
What the figures do not tell you
Each year's figure comes from a different annual report, and the reports do not always use the same measure. Some count all holders paid in the year, some count ongoing beneficiaries, and some give only the number selected. The reports do not say whether a year's payments include arrears for earlier years. The reports for 2017-18 to 2019-20 were not part of this check.
Where to check for updates
UGC publishes its annual report on ugc.gov.in. For new applicants, the relevant scheme is now NSPGS, which UGC says offers 10,000 scholarships of Rs 15,000 a month for two years, with 30 per cent reserved for women.
