How the scholarship was paid
What the numbers show
This UGC scholarship rewarded students who finished first or second in their university at undergraduate level and went on to a master's course. UGC's annual reports show 3,161 students paid Rs 11.77 crore in 2023-24, the highest of the three years shown here.
The trend
Students paid rose from 582 in 2021-22 to 1,564 in 2022-23 and 3,161 in 2023-24, and the money paid rose from Rs 4.67 crore to Rs 11.77 crore over the same period. The scheme provided for 3,000 scholarships a year, but payments in one financial year can cover students from more than one academic year, since each scholarship runs for two years and selections often finish late.
The scheme has closed to new students
From 2023-24 UGC merged this scholarship with three others into the National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies (NSPGS). NSPGS offers up to 10,000 scholarships of Rs 15,000 a month for 10 months a year, with 30 per cent of slots for women. Under the old scheme only students already selected are still being paid.
What the figures do not tell you
The reports give national totals only, with no split by state, subject or gender. Eligibility was limited to students below 30 at the time of admission in a regular, full-time master's course. They also do not say how many rank holders applied in each year.
