How the scholarship was paid
What the numbers show
The Post-Graduate Scholarship for Professional Courses helped SC and ST students pay for master's level study in fields such as engineering and management. UGC's annual reports show 2,304 students paid Rs 17.62 crore in 2023-24, the highest of the three years covered here.
The trend
The number of students paid rose from 585 in 2021-22 to 1,212 in 2022-23 and 2,304 in 2023-24. The money paid did not rise in step: it dipped from Rs 10.21 crore to Rs 9.45 crore before jumping to Rs 17.62 crore. Payments in a given year can include arrears for earlier academic years, because selections for an academic year were still running while the report was written. The 2022-23 report says the selection process for that academic year was still under way during the year.
The scheme has closed to new students
From 2023-24 UGC merged four post-graduate scholarships, including this one, into the National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies (NSPGS). NSPGS offers up to 10,000 scholarships of Rs 15,000 a month for 10 months a year, with 30 per cent of slots for women. Under the old scheme, only students already selected are still being paid.
What the figures do not tell you
The reports give national totals only. They do not break the numbers down by state, by caste category or by course, and they do not say how many eligible students applied but missed out because of the 1,000 slot limit.

UGC publishes its annual reports on ugc.gov.in. Students can track their own application on the National Scholarship Portal.
