Post-Matric Scholarship for OBC, EBC and DNT Students: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It
Applications to the Post-Matric Scholarship for OBC, EBC and DNT Students (a PM-YASASVI component of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment) are rejected most often for four reasons: an income certificate above the Rs 2.5 lakh ceiling, a caste certificate in the wrong name or format, a bank account that is not the student's own or not Aadhaar-seeded, and institute verification not completed in time. This article covers each cause and the exact fix before you reapply. The scholarship itself is summarised in the parent guide; here we focus only on why claims fail.
Rejection 1: Income certificate above Rs 2.5 lakh
The scheme applies a family income ceiling of Rs 2,50,000 a year from all sources. An income certificate showing more than this is rejected outright, and so is one that is expired or issued by an authority the state does not recognise.
Fix: Obtain a fresh income certificate from the competent state authority (usually the Tehsildar or SDM), covering the correct financial year. Confirm on your state welfare department's notification which authorities it accepts, because a Gram Panchayat or self-declaration is not sufficient in most states. If the household income is genuinely above the ceiling, this scholarship is not available.
Rejection 2: Caste certificate problems
The student must hold a valid OBC, EBC or DNT certificate in their own name from the competent authority. Common failures are a certificate in a parent's name, a certificate for a sub-caste not on the state's OBC list, or a scanned copy that is illegible.
Fix: Apply for the certificate in the student's own name through your state's e-district service. EBC and DNT applicants must obtain the certificate for their own specific category, an OBC certificate does not substitute for a DNT one. Verify the sub-caste appears on your state's notified backward-classes list.
Rejection 3: Bank account not in the student's name or not Aadhaar-seeded
Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer into the student's own Aadhaar-seeded account. A joint account, a parent's account, or an account whose Aadhaar seeding has lapsed causes the DBT to fail even after sanction.
Fix: Open or use a bank account in the student's sole name and complete Aadhaar seeding at the branch. Ask the bank to confirm the account is NPCI-mapped for DBT, not merely Aadhaar-linked. Re-enter the exact account number and IFSC on the portal.
Rejection 4: Institution did not verify before the deadline
An application on the National Scholarship Portal must be verified online by the institution's nodal officer. An unverified application is never forwarded to the state welfare department and simply lapses at year end.
Fix: After submitting, follow up with your college's scholarship section and confirm the status shows "verified by institute". Only the institution can push this stage; do it well before the verification cut-off, not on the last day.
Rejection 5: Failed the previous class or duplicate scholarship
A student who failed the preceding class is not eligible for a fresh award, and no student may draw another government scholarship for the same course simultaneously.
Fix: Ensure your previous-year marksheet shows a pass. If you already hold another central or state scholarship for the same course, withdraw from one before applying, you cannot combine two non-combinable awards.
Rejection 6: Applying on the wrong portal
Several states run their own scholarship portals for this scheme rather than the National Scholarship Portal. Filing on NSP when your state uses its own portal (or the reverse) means the claim is never processed.
Fix: Read your state Social Welfare or Backward Classes Welfare Department notification first, and apply only on the portal it names.
How to correct or appeal
If your application is rejected, the portal usually shows a reason against it. Correct the flagged document during the "defect" or correction window the portal opens, or raise the matter with your institution's nodal officer and the District Social Welfare Officer, who sanctions the payment. For portal and login problems, use the National Scholarship Portal helpdesk on 0120-6619540. Applying is free — no official will ask for your OTP or bank password, and no agent can add your name to the sanction list.
FAQ
Can I reapply the same year if rejected? Yes, within the application or correction window shown on the portal; after the window closes you must wait for the next year's cycle.
My status says "rejected by state" with no reason: what now? Contact the District Social Welfare Officer of your domicile state, who holds the sanction file and can state the specific defect.
Does a name mismatch cause rejection? Yes. Ensure the name is identical across Aadhaar, the caste certificate, the bank account and institution records before submitting.
