What is the National Post-Doctoral Fellowship?

The National Post-Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF) is a research fellowship for early-career scientists, offered under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in the Ministry of Science and Technology. It was run by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), which has since been subsumed into the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). The fellowship allows a researcher who has recently completed a PhD, MD or MS to work full-time on an approved research project at an Indian host institution.

The N-PDF is designed to identify motivated young researchers and give them independent support and mentorship at an early stage of their careers. It provides a monthly fellowship to the fellow and an annual research grant to cover consumables, contingency and travel, for a fixed period of 2 years.

Who is eligible for the N-PDF?

You can apply if:

• You are an Indian citizen.
• You hold a PhD, MD or MS degree, or have submitted your thesis and are awaiting the award.
• You are within the upper age limit: generally 35 years, with the usual relaxations for SC/ST/OBC candidates, women and persons with disabilities.
• You have a host institution and mentor in India willing to host your research.

You cannot apply if:

• You do not hold a PhD/MD/MS qualification.
• You are not an Indian citizen.
• You are above the upper age limit for your category.
• You are in a regular salaried position and cannot work full-time on the fellowship, since the N-PDF is a full-time research fellowship, not a top-up to an existing job.

2. Identify a host institution and mentor. Secure the agreement of an Indian institution and a mentor who will host and supervise your research.
3. Prepare your research proposal. Draft the research plan you intend to carry out during the fellowship, aligned with your host and mentor.
4. Fill in the online application. Enter your academic and personal details, upload your degree, proposal, host acceptance and other documents.

Terms and duration

The N-PDF runs for 2 years. The fellow receives a monthly fellowship and an annual research grant; the host institution typically receives an overhead component to support the research. How to check your N-PDF application status

2. Open your dashboard or "My Applications" section. Every proposal you have submitted is listed here with its current stage, such as submitted, under scrutiny, sent for review, or recommended/not recommended.
3. Check for messages or notices on the dashboard. ANRF/SERB typically pushes updates on evaluation, referee comments, or requests for clarification through the portal itself rather than by email alone, so a periodic login matters more than waiting for a mail.
4. Watch your registered email and phone. The email address and mobile number used at registration are the ones ANRF/SERB will use for any outreach, including requests for revised documents or an interview/interaction call, so keep both active and monitored.
5. Contact the helpdesk if the status appears frozen for an unusually long time. The SERB/ANRF helpdesk, reachable through the contact details on serbonline.in, can clarify whether a proposal is still under review or is stuck for a document-related reason.
6. Confirm the outcome and the offer letter through the portal once a decision is made. An award of the fellowship is communicated through the same account, along with the joining formalities at the host institution.

There is no separate SMS-based or offline tracking number for N-PDF, since unlike a subsidy or welfare payment this is a competitive research fellowship evaluated proposal by proposal; the online account is the single source of truth for where an application stands.

Common reasons N-PDF applications are rejected

Weak or vague research proposal. A large share of proposals are turned down not because the applicant is unqualified but because the proposed research plan lacks a clear problem, method, or connection to the host institution's existing strengths. Fix: work with your prospective mentor to sharpen the proposal into a focused, feasible two-year plan before submitting, rather than a broad statement of interest.

No confirmed host institution or mentor at the time of submission. Applications submitted without a firm, documented acceptance from a mentor and institution are weak on this count even if the applicant's own qualifications are strong. Fix: secure written consent from the host institution and mentor and upload it as part of the application; do not submit while this is still "in discussion."

Qualification not yet awarded or not clearly evidenced. Applicants who have only submitted their PhD thesis, without a provisional certificate or equivalent proof that the degree has been awarded or is imminent, are a common rejection category. Fix: apply once you have documentary proof of the degree (or a provisional certificate) rather than only a submission receipt, or wait for the specific call round that explicitly permits thesis-submitted candidates.

Applicant over the age limit for their category without claiming the correct relaxation. Age is checked strictly against the notified cut-off, and applicants sometimes miscalculate their eligible age or fail to attach the certificate needed to claim a category-based relaxation (SC/ST/OBC, women, persons with disabilities). Fix: calculate your age as on the exact reference date specified in the call, and attach the relevant category/disability certificate if you are relying on a relaxation.

Proposal overlaps too closely with the applicant's PhD work or an existing funded project. Reviewers look for genuine post-doctoral direction, not a continuation of the same thesis chapter or a project that is already covered by another grant to the same mentor or lab. Fix: frame the proposal as a distinct extension or new direction, and disclose any related ongoing project rather than leaving the overlap for a referee to discover.

Applicant is not actually available to work full-time on the fellowship. Since N-PDF is a full-time fellowship, candidates already holding a regular salaried post who cannot commit full-time attention are disqualified on this ground even if every document is otherwise in order. Fix: only apply once you are in a position to take a break from other employment for the fellowship period, and be explicit in the application about your availability.

Incomplete or inconsistent documentation. Missing signatures on the host institution's consent letter, a degree certificate that does not match the name/date on the identity proof, or an incomplete publication list can each stall or sink an otherwise sound application. Fix: cross-check every uploaded document against the details entered in the online form before final submission, since the portal does not always flag mismatches automatically.
