What the numbers show

The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme pays interest every month on a one-time five-year deposit. The National Savings Institute, part of the Finance Ministry, publishes monthly statements of collections in each small savings scheme. They show Rs 73,859.44 crore deposited in 2025-26, the highest of the five years shown, with net collection of Rs 27,785.81 crore after payouts.

The trend over five years

Deposits held between about Rs 50,000 crore and Rs 54,000 crore in 2021-22 and 2022-23, then rose to Rs 65,564.74 crore in 2023-24. Deposits dipped to Rs 61,471.42 crore in 2024-25 and reached a new high in 2025-26. Net collection swings more, because it depends on how many five-year deposits mature in a year. It was lowest in 2022-23 at Rs 6,493.17 crore.

This year so far

In the first five months of 2026-27, from April to August, savers deposited Rs 39,608.09 crore and net collection was Rs 18,791.19 crore.

What the figures do not tell you

The statements count money, not people. They do not give the number of accounts or the average deposit. The 2024-25 figures come from a supplementary March statement and may be revised in a later one. Almost all collections are at post offices; banks account for only a tiny amount.

Where to check

Monthly statements are on nsiindia.gov.in under scheme-wise collection data, with a separate page for each financial year and a provisional and supplementary statement for March. Interest rates are reset every quarter by the Finance Ministry.
