How a PMAY-U 2.0 house is funded
What the numbers show
PMAY-Urban has reached a large scale. According to the Housing Ministry, about 1.25 crore houses had been sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 as on 9 August 2026, and more than 1 crore had been completed and handed over. About 1 crore of the sanctioned houses are in the name of a woman, alone or jointly. For comparison, the ministry says only about 8 lakh urban houses were completed under earlier schemes between 2005 and 2014.
The trend over the years
In November 2021, a few months before the original mission period was due to end, 114.06 lakh houses were sanctioned but only 52.55 lakh were complete. Most of the work since then has been finishing houses already sanctioned: completions rose to 85.04 lakh by July 2024, 97.30 lakh by March 2026 and past 1 crore by August 2026. New sanctions grew mainly after PMAY-U 2.0 began in September 2024, which had sanctioned 18.38 lakh houses by August 2026, mostly under Beneficiary Led Construction.
State differences
The latest state-wise table, as on 22 July 2024, shows Uttar Pradesh with the most completed houses (15.47 lakh) and a high completion rate. Andhra Pradesh had the most houses sanctioned (21.37 lakh) but only 9.74 lakh completed. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh had completed more than 80 per cent of their sanctioned houses, while Bihar and Rajasthan were well behind.
What the figures do not tell you
A completed house is not always an occupied one: in July 2024, 85.04 lakh houses were complete but 81.67 lakh were occupied. The national totals mix the original PMAY-U, the closed CLSS vertical and PMAY-U 2.0. A newer state-wise table had not been published at the time of writing, so state figures are about two years old.
Where to check the live numbers
The pmay-urban.gov.in portal carries the mission's progress figures, and the PMAY-U 2.0 unified web portal handles applications and status checks. The Housing Ministry also reports state-wise progress in Parliament replies, which PIB publishes during each session.
