How a PMFBY claim reaches a farmer

How a PMFBY claim reaches a farmer 1 Crop insured Loanee farmers are enrolled by their bank; others apply via bank, CSC or the portal. 2 Premium paid Farmer pays 2% for Kharif, 1.5% for Rabi, 5% for commercial crops; governments pay the rest. 3 Loss reported Localised losses must be reported within 72 hours through the app, helpline 14447 or the insurer. 4 Loss assessed Yield is measured through crop cutting experiments and YES-TECH, or a field survey. 5 Claim paid The claim is calculated on the national portal and paid into the farmer's bank account. What the numbers show

The Agriculture Ministry describes PMFBY as the third largest insurance scheme in the world by premium. According to the ministry, 92.46 crore farmer applications were insured between Kharif 2016 and Rabi 2025-26, and Rs 2.06 lakh crore was paid in claims on 26.33 crore applications (PIB, 29 August 2026). Roughly one in four insured applications has received a claim. A farmer who insures two crops in a year counts as two applications, so these are not counts of people.

The trend over the years

Coverage has grown sharply in recent years. Farmer applications went from 616.16 lakh in 2019-20 to 831.76 lakh in 2021-22 and 1,510 lakh in 2024-25, the highest so far. The number of farmers enrolled rose from 3.17 crore in 2022-23 to 4.19 crore in 2024-25, a 32 per cent jump (PIB, August 2025). Cumulative claims rose from about Rs 1.56 lakh crore in March 2024 to Rs 2.06 lakh crore by August 2026.

State differences

Maharashtra insured the most farmers in Kharif 2025 (45.99 lakh), followed by Rajasthan (36.45 lakh) and Madhya Pradesh (26.80 lakh). Enrolment fell in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh after the two states stopped paying the farmer's premium share. Uttar Pradesh grew 35 per cent and Haryana 20 per cent. Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal have rejoined the scheme, and Bihar plans to return from Rabi 2026-27.

What the figures do not tell you

The ministry does not publish a full year-wise table of claims, so the trend in claims has to be read from cumulative totals at different dates. Claims are counted when paid, which can be a season or more after the loss. The figures also do not show how many claims were rejected or delayed, or how much premium the governments paid.

Where to check the live numbers

The pmfby.gov.in portal lets farmers check policy and claim status and has a state-wise dashboard. The Agriculture Ministry publishes season updates through PIB, and the Krishi Rakshak helpline 14447 handles complaints.
