How a PMJJBY claim gets paid
What the numbers show
PMJJBY is a Rs 2 lakh life cover for Rs 436 a year. According to the Finance Ministry's release of 9 May 2026, the scheme had more than 27.43 crore cumulative enrolments and had paid Rs 21,512.50 crore on 10,75,625 claims as on 29 April 2026. Every paid claim is Rs 2 lakh, so the amount paid tracks the number of claims closely.
The trend over the years
Enrolments grew slowly in the first two years, from 295.53 lakh in March 2016 to 310.24 lakh in March 2017. Growth picked up after 2020: the total passed 10 crore in March 2021, came close to 20 crore in March 2024 and reached 27.16 crore by March 2026. The number of claims paid each year has risen from about 89,000 in 2022-23 to 1.5 lakh in 2025-26, when 1,50,153 claims were paid.
Women's share has grown. In March 2016 women were about 37 per cent of enrolments; by March 2026 they were about 46 per cent (1,259.66 lakh out of 2,716.14 lakh). Jan Dhan account holders make up 8.09 crore of the enrolments.
What the figures do not tell you
These are cumulative enrolments. A person who renews every year is counted again, and a person who let the cover lapse is still in the total. The release does not give the number of people with an active policy in a given year. It also does not give state-wise figures or the number of claims rejected.
Where to check the live numbers
The Department of Financial Services releases fresh figures through PIB every May, when the Jan Suraksha schemes mark their anniversary. The scheme rules, claim forms and enrolment link are on jansuraksha.gov.in. For your own policy, ask the bank that debits the premium.
