What the numbers show

PM-KISAN pays Rs 6,000 a year to land-holding farmer families in three instalments of Rs 2,000. Since the first instalment in early 2019, the government has released 23 instalments worth more than Rs 4.47 lakh crore, according to the Cabinet release of 31 July 2026. A typical instalment now reaches between 9 crore and 10 crore farmers and costs the Centre roughly Rs 18,000 crore to Rs 23,500 crore.

The trend over the instalments

The first instalment reached only 3.16 crore farmers because states were still uploading data. Coverage climbed quickly and peaked at 10.48 crore farmers in the 11th instalment (April to July 2022), as shown in the Lok Sabha reply of July 2025.

The 12th instalment fell to 8.57 crore. This is when land seeding, Aadhaar-based payment and e-KYC became compulsory, and payments to farmers who had not completed them were held back. Numbers recovered in later rounds through saturation drives, crossing 10 crore again in the 19th instalment. The 21st instalment reached 9.34 crore farmers, the 22nd about 9.32 crore and the 23rd about 9.49 crore.

Amounts do not always track beneficiary numbers exactly. Farmers whose payments were held back receive their due instalments once they complete the mandatory steps, so a release can carry more than Rs 2,000 for some farmers.

Women and recoveries

Nearly one in four beneficiaries is a woman farmer, and women have received more than Rs 1.06 lakh crore in total. States have also recovered Rs 416.75 crore from ineligible beneficiaries such as income tax payers and government employees, as of December 2025.

What the figures do not tell you

These are national totals. They do not show how many eligible farmers are still outside the scheme, how many were removed as ineligible, or how many are waiting on e-KYC. Figures for the same instalment can also change: the 23rd instalment was first reported as 9.44 crore farmers and later revised to 9.49 crore, and the 19th instalment was revised from 9.88 crore to 10.07 crore as late payments were added.
