How a PMSBY claim gets paid
What the numbers show
PMSBY offers Rs 2 lakh accident cover for a premium of Rs 20 a year. By 29 April 2026 it had more than 58.09 crore cumulative enrolments, and insurers had paid 1,84,662 claims worth Rs 3,667.52 crore, according to the Finance Ministry's 11th anniversary release.
The trend over the years
Growth was slow in the first two years, from 9.41 crore enrolments in March 2016 to 9.95 crore in March 2017. It then picked up every year, and the 10th anniversary release shows the sharpest rise in 2023-24, when cumulative enrolments went from 33.78 crore to 43.81 crore, an addition of about 10 crore in one year.
Claims paid each year, worked out from the cumulative totals, ranged between about 10,600 and 20,600 up to 2024-25. In 2025-26, 24,736 claims were paid, the highest for any single year.
Women and Jan Dhan account holders
Women account for 27.45 crore enrolments, almost half the total, up from 39 percent in March 2016. About 19.30 crore enrolments come from Jan Dhan account holders, which shows how the scheme rides on the basic accounts opened under PMJDY.
What the figures do not tell you
The enrolment figure is cumulative. PMSBY is a one-year cover renewed every June, and someone enrolled in 2016 who let the auto-debit lapse is still part of the 58 crore total. The government does not publish the number of active covers in these releases. The figures also do not show how many claims were rejected or how long settlement took, and no state-wise split is given here.
Where to check the live numbers
The Department of Financial Services publishes updated figures each May on the scheme's anniversary through PIB, and the Jan Suraksha portal at jansuraksha.gov.in has scheme rules, forms and enrolment.
