What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 (PMUY 2.0) is the second phase of the Ujjwala scheme, launched on 10 August 2021 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh. Ujjwala 2.0 extends deposit-free LPG connections to poor families who could not be covered in the first phase, with an initial target of one crore additional connections.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ujjwala 2.0 builds on the original scheme by adding a free first refill and a free gas stove, and by making enrolment simpler for migrant families through self-declaration. The connection is issued only in the name of an adult woman of the household.

How many connections has Ujjwala 2.0 delivered?

The Ujjwala programme as a whole had reached about 10.33 crore connections across the country as of 1 July 2025, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Ujjwala 2.0 accounts for the connections released after August 2021, and the government has kept the door open rather than closing the scheme at a fixed target. In September 2025 the Cabinet approved the release of 25 lakh additional PMUY connections during FY 2025-26 to clear pending applications and move towards saturation, so a household that missed the earlier waves can still apply.

Ujjwala 2.0 matters because the barrier it removes is up-front cost, not the fuel price. A general LPG connection requires a security deposit of about Rs 1,600 plus the cost of the first cylinder and a stove; often more than a month's income for a poor family. By waiving the deposit and giving the first refill and hotplate free, Ujjwala 2.0 lets a family start cooking with gas on day one and worry about the next refill only when the cylinder runs out.

Who is eligible for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0?

You can apply if:

• You are an adult woman aged 18 years or older.
• No member of your household already holds an LPG connection.
• Your family belongs to an eligible category: SC or ST, PM Awas Yojana (Gramin), Antyodaya Anna Yojana, Most Backward Classes, forest dwellers, tea and ex-tea garden tribes, people on islands and river islands, SECC-listed families, or a state BPL list.
• Alternatively, you submit a poor-household self-declaration that you have no LPG connection.

You cannot apply if:

• A family member already has an LPG connection.
• You are male. The connection must be in an adult woman's name.
• Your household is outside every eligible category and cannot give a valid self-declaration.

The key relaxation in 2.0 is that migrants do not need to prove local residence; the self-declaration itself is accepted as address proof.

How to apply for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 online

1. Open pmuy.gov.in and click Apply for New Ujjwala 2.0 Connection.
2. Select your preferred gas company; Indane, Bharatgas or HP Gas.
3. On the company portal, choose your state, district and nearest distributor.
4. Complete the KYC form with your Aadhaar, personal details and bank account number and IFSC, and submit the family or self-declaration.
5. Upload the documents (migrants attach a self-declaration instead of address proof) and submit to get a reference number.
6. The distributor verifies your details and hands over the deposit-free connection with the free stove and first refill.

How to apply for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 offline

1. Visit the nearest LPG distributor with your Aadhaar and bank details.
2. Fill the Ujjwala 2.0 KYC form, mark your eligible category and sign the declaration.
3. Submit the form; migrants can attach a self-declaration in place of ration card and address proof.
4. Collect the acknowledgement and receive the deposit-free connection after verification.

How much benefit does Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 provide?

Ujjwala 2.0 covers the LPG security deposit of about Rs 1,600 and, unlike the first phase, provides the first refill and a gas stove free of cost through the oil marketing companies. This removes almost the entire up-front cost of starting to cook with LPG.

For continued use, Ujjwala 2.0 beneficiaries receive the same PMUY refill subsidy of Rs 300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 9 refills a year in FY 2025-26, credited by Direct Benefit Transfer to the Aadhaar-linked bank account after each cylinder is purchased. The Union Cabinet approved this targeted subsidy in August 2025 at a total outlay of Rs 12,000 crore for the year, and it applies only to PMUY beneficiaries, not to general LPG consumers. A 5 kg cylinder is subsidised proportionately. If you buy more than nine cylinders in the year, the tenth onwards is charged at the ordinary market price.

The subsidy is not deducted at the counter. Ujjwala 2.0 beneficiaries pay the full market price when they book a cylinder, and the Rs 300 lands back in the Aadhaar-linked bank account a few days later. This is why an active, correctly seeded bank account matters as much as the connection itself, a closed or frozen account means the money has nowhere to go.

How to check your Ujjwala 2.0 application status

1. Contact the distributor where you submitted the KYC form, quoting your reference number.
2. Track connection and refill details through the Indane, Bharatgas or HP Gas app or website linked to your registered mobile number.
3. Check your Aadhaar-linked bank account for the subsidy DBT credit after each refill.

What each Ujjwala 2.0 document is for

Ujjwala 2.0 deliberately asks for fewer papers than a normal LPG connection, and understanding what each one does prevents avoidable rejection.

• Aadhaar of the applicant woman is the anchor. It establishes identity, feeds the e-KYC that de-duplicates against existing connections, and links the refill subsidy to a bank account. The connection cannot be issued in a man's name, so the Aadhaar must be the woman's own.
• KYC form with self-declaration (KYC-1 and KYC-2 formats) records the family composition and confirms that no household member already has an LPG connection. For a migrant, this same self-declaration is accepted as address proof, which is the single biggest relaxation in the 2.0 phase.
• Bank account details (number and IFSC) are where the refill subsidy is credited by DBT. The account should ideally be the applicant woman's own and Aadhaar-seeded; a subsidy sent to a dormant or wrongly seeded account bounces.
• Ration card, where the family has one, doubles as address and family proof, but it is optional under 2.0. Migrants who left their ration card behind in their home state are not turned away.
• Category proof — an SC/ST certificate, PM Awas Yojana letter or a place on the state BPL/SECC list: is needed only when the family claims eligibility through a listed category rather than the general poor-household self-declaration.

Common reasons Ujjwala 2.0 applications are rejected or delayed

• An existing LPG connection in the household. e-KYC de-duplication catches any active connection against a family member's Aadhaar, and this is the most frequent ground for rejection. Ujjwala 2.0 is strictly for households with no LPG connection at all.
• Aadhaar and bank details not matching or not seeded. A name mismatch, or a bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded, blocks the refill subsidy DBT even after the connection is issued.
• The connection sought in a man's name. The connection must be in an adult woman's name; an application in a male member's name is rejected outright.
• Incomplete or unsigned KYC form. Missing the self-declaration, or leaving the category field blank without offering the general poor-household declaration, stalls verification at the distributor.
• Duplicate application across distributors. Applying to more than one gas company or distributor for the same household flags the case and holds it pending verification.

If a connection is refused, ask the distributor for the reason in writing and correct the specific defect: usually a de-duplication hit or a KYC gap; rather than re-applying from scratch.
