Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC Students: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It
This is a supporting guide for Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC Students. See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.
Why Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC Students applications get rejected
Applications for the Pre-Matric Scholarship for OBC Students: now claimed as the pre-matric OBC component of PM-YASASVI under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment; are rejected far more often for process errors than for ineligibility. A wrong bank account, an income certificate from the wrong office, or a school that never verified the form will sink an otherwise valid claim. This article names each failure and the fix, plus the correction and grievance routes. For the amount, eligibility and how to apply, see the parent guide; the one-line reminder is that this is Rs 4,000 a year for a Class 9 or Class 10 OBC student in a family earning up to Rs 2.5 lakh.
The rejection that catches the most people: the bank account
Payment is made only by Direct Benefit Transfer, and the DBT step is where genuine claims die.
- Account not in the student's own name. A parent's account is not accepted. Fix: open a minor savings account in the student's name and enter it on the portal.
- Account not seeded for DBT. Aadhaar linked to a bank is different from the account being seeded in the NPCI DBT mapper. Fix: ask the branch to seed the account for DBT, then check the NPCI Aadhaar-mapper status.
- Name mismatch between Aadhaar, passbook and school records. Fix: make the name identical across all three. A scholarship can be sanctioned and still fail here.
Certificate and income mistakes
- OBC certificate in a parent's name instead of the student's. Fix: obtain a fresh OBC certificate in the student's own name from the competent authority notified in your state.
- Certificate not on the state OBC list. A community listed as OBC in one state is not automatically OBC in another. Fix: confirm your community appears on your state's notified OBC list.
- Income certificate above Rs 2.5 lakh, expired, or from a non-notified authority. Fix: get a current-year income certificate within the ceiling from the correct revenue authority.
School verification and portal mistakes
- School verification not completed before the cut-off. Without it the claim never reaches the state welfare department. Fix: confirm directly with the institute nodal officer that the application is verified on NSP before the deadline.
- Filed on the wrong portal. Some states use their own backward classes welfare portal rather than the National Scholarship Portal. Fix: follow your state welfare department's notification and file where it directs.
- Student in Class 8 or below. The central scheme starts at Class 9. Fix: use your state's own scheme for lower classes.
- Duplicate claim against another government scholarship for the same year. Fix: hold only one government scholarship per academic year.
Fixing a "defective" application
When an officer returns an application as defective, NSP opens a limited correction facility rather than requiring a fresh form. The editable fields at institute or state level include category, annual income, Aadhaar number, day-scholar/hosteller status, IFSC code and account number, according to NSP's process notes. To correct:
- Log in, open the defective application, and read the exact reason displayed.
- Edit the flagged field or re-upload the corrected document.
- Resubmit within the correction window and have the school re-verify.
Never file a second application from the same Aadhaar — a duplicate is itself grounds for rejection.
If you think the rejection is wrong
Use the Grievance module on scholarships.gov.in: enter your application ID and the complaint to raise a tracked ticket, viewable on your dashboard; the India.gov.in service listing indicates grievances are generally resolved within about 30 days. For disputes over caste, income or domicile certificates, go to your District Social Welfare or Backward Classes Welfare Officer. For portal, login or OTR problems, the NSP helpdesk is 0120-6619540.
Resubmission checklist
- Bank account in the student's name, DBT-seeded, name identical to Aadhaar and school records.
- Valid current-year income certificate within Rs 2.5 lakh from a notified authority.
- OBC certificate in the student's own name, community on the state OBC list.
- Correct portal for your state and correct class (9 or 10).
- Only one government scholarship claimed; school verification confirmed.
There is no application fee. No school, cyber cafe or agent can charge to file, correct or "sanction" this scholarship: sanction is a departmental decision based only on eligibility.
