What is the PRL Junior Research Fellowship?

The PRL Junior Research Fellowship is a doctoral fellowship offered by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad. A premier research institution funded by the Department of Space, under the Ministry of Science and Technology umbrella of central research bodies. PRL admits Junior Research Fellows each year to pursue PhD-level research across its scientific divisions.

According to the PRL fellowship pages, research areas include astronomy and astrophysics, planetary sciences, space and atmospheric sciences, geosciences, atomic-molecular-and-optical physics, solar physics and theoretical physics. A Junior Research Fellow works under a PRL faculty guide, registers for a PhD with an affiliated university, and progresses to Senior Research Fellow after a review.

This is a research career track, not a coursework scholarship. Fellows are expected to commit to full-time doctoral research at PRL.

How much does the PRL JRF pay?

According to the PRL fellowship page, the fellowship pays:

• Rs 37,000 per month at the Junior Research Fellow (JRF) stage.
• Rs 42,000 per month at the Senior Research Fellow (SRF) stage, on successful review, usually at the end of the first two years.
• House Rent Allowance and other benefits as per PRL rules, and, for exceptional fellows in later years, additional research incentives as notified in the advertisement.

The fellowship is tenable for the duration of the PhD, subject to satisfactory annual progress and PRL's academic review.

Who is eligible for the PRL JRF?

You can apply if:

• You hold a first class (minimum 60% or equivalent) at both Bachelor's and Master's level, in eligible fields such as Physics, Engineering Physics, Photonics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Geophysics, Earth Science, Oceanography or Remote Sensing (exact fields vary by discipline).
• You have qualified a national exam accepted by PRL: CSIR-UGC NET (JRF/AP), GATE, or JEST — in the subject relevant to the discipline you apply for.
• You are within the upper age limit. For the 2026 cycle the upper age limit was 28 years as on 1 July 2026, with relaxations as per rules.

You cannot apply if:

• You do not hold a valid, in-date qualifying-exam score (CSIR-UGC NET, GATE or JEST) in an accepted subject.
• You do not meet the first-class requirement at both degree levels.
• You are over the upper age limit and do not qualify for relaxation.

Because acceptable exams, subjects and score years change from cycle to cycle, always read the specific advertisement before applying.

How to apply for the PRL Junior Research Fellowship

1. Watch the PRL website (prl.res.in) and its "Opportunities" / "Job Vacancies" pages for the annual JRF admission advertisement.
2. Confirm your eligibility, degree class, accepted qualifying exam and subject, and the upper age limit stated in that cycle's advertisement.
3. Register and apply online during the advertised window (for the 2026 cycle applications were open in April-May 2026), filling in your academic details and qualifying-exam score.
4. Upload the required mark sheets, scorecard and date-of-birth proof, then submit the application before the deadline.
5. If shortlisted, appear for the interview at PRL (held in June for the 2026 cycle). Selection is by merit.
6. On selection, complete joining formalities and register for a PhD with the affiliated university under your PRL guide.
