What the numbers show

RBSK is one of the largest child health screening programmes in the world. From 2014-15 to 2023-24, Mobile Health Teams carried out 160.84 crore screenings of children for birth defects, diseases, deficiencies and developmental delays. 11.90 crore children were found with one of the selected conditions, and 5.64 crore were given secondary or tertiary care after referral.

Teams and centres

Screening is done by block-level Mobile Health Teams, each usually with doctors, a nurse and a pharmacist, who visit anganwadis and government schools. Children who need more care go to a District Early Intervention Centre. The Health Ministry's 2025 achievements report lists 11,531 teams and 451 DEICs. The 2023-24 figures reported by states were 11,821 teams and 430 DEICs, so the number of centres has grown while the team count has dipped slightly.

State differences

Uttar Pradesh has the most Mobile Health Teams (1,578) but only 8 DEICs, while Madhya Pradesh has the most DEICs (51) with 650 teams. Some states follow a different model. Andhra Pradesh uses PHC medical officers and ANMs instead of Mobile Health Teams, Kerala uses Junior Public Health Nurses, and Delhi screens children under its own School Health Scheme. So a low team count does not always mean less screening.

What the figures do not tell you

The screening total counts screenings, not unique children. Most children are screened twice a year at anganwadis and once a year at school, so one child can appear many times. The figures are reported by states and are not audited counts. Data on how many referred children finished treatment is not published in the same reply.
